I continue to think about decentralized networks. And I'm wondering, among other things, if we need squares or courtyards, and why good metaphors play a role in wise decisions.#mastodon #fediverse #activitypub #socialmedia #socialnetworks #selfhostedhttps://anders.thoresson.se/post/2025/05/town-squares-backyards-better-metaphors-and-decentralised-networks/

@anders in my definition social networking has nothing to do with tech, but can be supported by it.What happens after you open your eyes every morning? You start moving through social contexts, having social experiences and engage in social networking with other people. Offline, and recently online too. Via a computing device that reduces social bandwidth. We are still learning to cope with this new way of connecting.Taking own life as inspiration, how do we want our social experience to be?

@smallcircles Yes, you are of course right! Had a passage about that in an early draft, but see that it was lost in the process.

@anders yours is a very nice article, really like it. These kinds of questions we should ask ourselves. Not build tech and then see how it lands. Not do 'digital transformation' because it is a hype. Not build only public square, where 'stalkers follow' you.In our neighborhood we don't walk into the dark alley, or the criminal Hell's Angels pub. We circle around a ruffian on the street, avoiding them.In social contexts we have different faces, identities. We behave differently everywhere.

@anders I started turning these kinds of definitions into a new field called Social experience design. Elaborating this under Social coding commons. Part of this involves working-in-commons to ensure that we create commons-based social networks, not build skynet for big tech.https://social.coop/@smallcircles/113652552598382201SX starts from personal perspective, focusing on individual needs, then scaling up to inter-personal relationships to ultimately be able to design for societal impact with the solutions we create.

Say, @anders, something to muse about.. I want to update the delightful fediverse apps list. Having a huge backlog of stuff to add.But also the list is getting messy in terms of categorisation. Would a separation in two sections 1. Social networking (new fedi use cases) and 2. Social media (as-we-know-it, but decentralized) be a good division?I want to attract more attention to category one, as imho that is where the future of the social web should be. Creating a true peopleverse :)

@smallcircles Possibly! Is the list already online somewhere to have a look at?I wonder if the two terms are treated as one by most people, and separating them like that could perhaps add confusion if you really haven’t thought about it?

@anders Yes! I maintain them via https://delightful.club .. there are 4 fedi-related ones, and the lists themself are hosted on Codeberg in separate repo's (the idea is similar to awesome project on Github, but this is only for FOSS, Open data and Open science.https://codeberg.org/fediverse/delightful-fediverse-apps

@anders I agree it can be confusing, but some intro text may do wonders. In general we use many many terms where the exact meaning is in the eye of the beholder. As you also indicate in the article. We have continuous expectation mismatches, and it leads to social clashes and drama (on public squares :)

@smallcircles Any examples on what you would put in each category? I think it doesn’t only come down to the technical solution, but also the intention of the specific installment of a piece of software. I have a small, private Mastodon instance only for family. But the same tool powers some huge instances as well.

@anders just started to pick up list maintenance again, have to think about it. Keeping these lists updated is a bit of a chore and all in all time-consuming.

@smallcircles > just started to pick up list maintenance againGood to hear. Your work on this is appreciated as always.BTW Thanks for your patience with my delay in acting on my offer to help. I'm still keen to get head back into the bleeding edge of AP dev. I've just had a bunch of curve balls to deal with in my personal life.

@anders But I want to highlight those fedi apps where we go beyond traditional social media. Highlight different use cases or particular innovations.

@strypey hope things improve soonest. đź’•You are a 'stayer' in the commons, always contributing and helping people whenever there is opportunity. That is very admirable and the qualities that make fedi such a nice place to be. Thank you Danyl!

@anders @smallcircles I agree social media and social networks are different, but maybe not the way you do.social media is a public square, but not inherently corporate, algo driven or full of ads. it's what I want the fedi to be. anybody should be able to post anything on the web and the public decides it should go viral. everything ties into it and the power of money to decide what we know about goes away, replaced by the democracy here.social networks are groups with a single sign-on.

@wjmaggos @smallcircles Agreed! I also want some of both. But to me, I find more value, at least right now, in the smaller backyards than on the global town square.

@anders @wjmaggos What works very well is making comparisons to the offline world. Here we are a 'single-threaded' individual that walks their own timeline, who enters a global square when there is a need and just as seamlessly weaves into different social contexts where other social networking use cases play out, for different audiences. This approach is what Social experience design or #SX explores for patterns & practices of its design method.See also: https://social.coop/@smallcircles/114481995392093396

@smallcircles @anders perhaps we're just still in the early days of integrating the open web into our lives and thus culture, delayed by lots of media not being on the internet or behind paywalls. and the ability for most of us to be social, still being locked to platforms. and of course not having an easy way to automatically and directly pay for software we use and media we consume. the walls usurp the power from the public to the gatekeepers.

@wjmaggos @anders Yes, I've always thought the future of the social web in a technical sense would be both federated and p2p i.e. 'hybrid decentralization' as I call it. It would be great if we had autonomous clients where our personal data resides, in this set up, so we are in control. This is amongst others the direction that #ActivityPods takes, combining #ActivityPub and #Solid linked data standards.https://activitypods.org
