You might as well substitute "magic" for "artificial intelligence" in this sentence."What we're able to tell is that there are really small changes in the eye that we probably wouldn't pick up using your standard optometry or ophthalmology tests but that taking those images and being able to use artificial intelligence may be able to give you an idea of a person's risk for dementia."#DrAshleighBarrettYoung, 2025https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/559118/researchers-uncover-link-between-eye-health-and-dementia#MOLE #AI

@strypey Well yeah, perhaps they mean machine learning, which really is just a form of statistical analysis. I find these types of article really interesting, particularly when the authors do what they do at the Guardian or New Scientist and get another scientist to comment. This could be a massive breakthrough or a step in a long line of similar studies. I'm gonna call it useful research. 😊

@RobynNuthall > I'm gonna call it useful researchDon't get me wrong, the research itself is bona fide. What I'm commenting on is the tendency to endow future versions of "machine learning" with effectively magical abilities. I see no reason to assume Trained MOLEs will ever be any better than humans at doing things like this reliably.

@strypey Yes strong agree! There's so much magical thinking on AI at present. .... Both sides, "it'll be amageddon" ... "it'll be Valhalla"!

@RobynNuthall > Both sides, "it'll be amageddon" ... "it'll be Valhalla"!I quote a good take on this in my post about MOLE Training;"Treat as singing with forked tongues the chorus of alarmism about AI dangers from too many sci-tech stars. Note that their warnings are focused on the future — with no mention of damage being done by AI in the present, in which fortunes are being made by some of those alarmists as they themselves exploit the all-invading technology..."https://post-gutenberg.com/2024/01/01/the-proof-that-newspapers-reader-commenters-are-data-collection-gold-is-in-site-owners-tightening-restrictions-attempts-to-control-the-historical-record-and-seizing-gifts-to-the-co/
