One more "dot brand" (or "dot corps") TLD deleted. One more company understanding that it is not always useful. https://mastodon.gougere.fr/@DNSresolver/114391731977161833

@bortzmeyer Hi, can you explain to non-professionals why such TLDs are “bad”? Pollution of the root? Or maybe you're not saying “bad” but only that, e.g., a .foo.fr or .foo.com domain would have no tangible disadvantage as compared to a .foo TLD?One of my big gripes with French banks is that several of them use multiple “unrelated” domains depending on the process: client access to their account, domain used in the From of some emails sent by the bank, other domain in the From of other emails, etc.

@blobster There is no operational consequence for the root. Even with hundreds of vanity TLDs, the root zone is a small one. We could add thousands of TLD without serious consequences for the DNS.

@blobster The organisations using several domains have a few good reasons (using a dedicated domain for mass emailing avoids the serious work domain to be tainted by the bad reputation of the mass sender). And many bad reasons, from incompetence (many people do not know that, when they have example.com, they can create product.example.com so they instead rent product-example.com) to bureaucracy (the various domains are created by various departments who do not collaborate).

@blobster I said "not always useful". Most .brand/.corp are not used or only partially used so one can wonder why registering a TLD if you don't use it.(They were probably registered for prestige or because a salesman was convincing.)

@bortzmeyer Thanks for your insight! Regarding this:using a dedicated domain for mass emailing avoids the serious work domain to be tainted by the bad reputation of the mass senderAssuming all mass emails were legit stuff, this shouldn't happen, right? Or maybe it could because of 1) bogus “this is spam” reports and 2) people being annoyed by marketing emails that would report them as spam?

@blobster Or because the AI at the recipient decides that too much email is too much.
