Okay, time to get agitative.Forcing left-handed children to use their right hand should universally be made illegal child abuse in jurisdictions where this isn't the case already (I don't know about any, though)Since I'm myself a victim of that madness, which causes nothing but lifelong harm, I'll instantly block anyone who's coming in here to defend it. This issue isn't debatable, negotiable, or defendable for me.Thanks for your understanding. My parents are innocent in my case, btw.

@KuramaSuben Fellow left-hander here. I agree 💯. Life is hard as fuck in the most micro of ways. It's hard to convey, but it builds up. We die earlier than right-handers too. There's also stuff we gotta just accept that we have a natural disposition against getting good at. Calligraphy is the biggest one for me.

@sleepytako I frequently suffered migraine attacks from second grade until I started to write with my left hand again almost 10 years ago. Some damage still remains, though, like confusing left and right when not thinking about it first. Also the muscles in my left hand are still not up to snuff for writing, but at least the strain at my brain is gone.

@KuramaSuben @sleepytako I was basically ambidextrous, but when I went to school they made me write with my right as it was slightly stronger. Now I can only write right handed, but most other things either hand is OK. I can never work out which had I should use for a knife and fork.I also have terrible trouble telling left from right without thinking about it first.

@Haikyoneko @KuramaSuben @sleepytako I am basically the same, with the same story. Not sure my right really was slightly stronger. Like Suben, I went to a Catholic school, and they just "oh, you can't write yet, here use your right."I'm pretty much either or for everything else. There was probably no good reason to force right, or not allow my to experiment with both at least.

@sleepytako @Haikyoneko It's actually a miracle that I made it a tenured professor under these circumstances lol. The first few years of my school life pointed at something different. Something very different.

@sleepytako @Haikyoneko I'm not dyslexic, but I can't handle maths. I even struggle with simple elementary school level arithmetics. This problem runs in my family regardless of individual handedness, though, but it's possible that my right hand writing has exacerbated the problem.

@KuramaSuben @sleepytako I might be dyslexic. I can't spell for shit or tell left from right. I am (or mostly was) a teacher! 😂

@KuramaSuben Hard agree. I am ambidextrous, but have ended up essentially right handed because of initial assumptions. So I can't write left handed pretty much at all.But then I can dazzle people mid-meal by switching hands with chopsticks like its no big deal. And it isn't because I taught myself to use chopsticks, so it doesn't matter which hand I use.

@KuramaSuben I also use touchpads equally. I favor my right hand, likely due to writing/schooling, but if my right hand is busy doing something else, I will use the touchpad with my left. I wish I could orient the mouse cursor to be dead center rather than tilted one way or the other.

@Haikyoneko @sleepytako Either dyslexic or a victim of the hopeless mess that is English spelling. Have you ever learned a language with straightforward spelling rules? (Japanese doesn't count becausea) not straightforward* andb) not alphabetic *It would be if only kana is considered.)

@Haikyoneko @KuramaSuben We are still living with the ramifications of "sinistre" or "left = sinister" unfortunately.Medieval nonsense that should best be left in the Medival Ages, and yet...

@KuramaSuben @sleepytako interestingly, my gf is fluent in English, Hebrew and Brazilian Portuguese, passable in French, German and Italian, but just can't make much progress with Japanese. Maybe she started learning too late, or it's the writing system....

@Haikyoneko @sleepytako Well, besides Hebrew, all the other languages belong to the same family with the same grammatical principles. From what I know Hebrew also doesn't seem to be that far off from the Indo-European template, but I could be wrong. I guess it's either the difficult to access writing system or she's struggling with getting a handle on the grammar structure, which should be pretty different from any of the languages you named, besides the completely different writing system.

@Haikyoneko @sleepytako The grammatical principles are pretty much the same throughout the Indo-European language family, plus a tonne of similar words if you get a grip at the regular sound changes between languages (beware the so-called "false friends"). Details like which words have what gender, where are the adjectives placed, what inflexions got lost throughout the ages, etc. are different, but it's actually not that terribly different compared to languages outside the family.

@Haikyoneko @sleepytako Which brings me back to Hebrew. It's outside that family, so it could be as far off as Japanese is, but I lack detailed knowledge about Hebrew. That said, it should definitely be as far off from Japanese as any Indo-European language.

@Haikyoneko @KuramaSuben yep. It's hard to find a language to learn that is even less useful than Japanese. Hebrew is one of those.
