We need to make money flow directly to the creators of the content we consume, and that will only happen if we can make that easy and keep it fully in our control. Until this happens, the wealthy will dominate culture, and thus society. Moving from their control over what's on TV to what's in our algos is not an improvement, and probably worse. #AttentionDemocracy #PublicPatron

@wjmaggos Agreed. Unfortunately “decentralized payment” is a mined territory filled with crypto bros. I prefer state control to evil corporations or individuals.Brazil for example has a state-defined system called Pix which means you can easily send money to a registered phone number or email (or a random key). Works online or with that guy selling food on the beach (it is simply backed by a bank account). No fees for individuals.

@wjmaggos I agree with you in principle, but I don’t know that it is worse. Before Youtube, the gatekeepers were TV/radio/film/record label/magazine execs. It was much harder to get exposure. Algo-driven exposure sucks, but the threshold is much lower these days. Getting in the game has never been easier. Getting to the top of the game is as hard as it has ever been

@santiago absolutely. fiat not crypto.can Pix be built into programs to do something pay creators a percentage of an amount you set aside, based on time consuming their work? or even just automatically monthly give a little directly from your bank account to that of your fedi server host? and all the people whose programs you use?

@wjmaggos I have never integrated it on a site myself but I hear it’s pretty straightforward yes. For simple uses people just generate a QR code and with any Brazilian banking or commerce app people can scan and pay the desired amount (or chose it), notifying recipient immediately. Brilliantly simple and accessible (to anyone with a bank account).Recurring payments with Pix were planned yes and I am not sure if they are available already.

@zeph but is that an issue of the internet and related tech, or the algo? anybody can get stuff to anybody but who is going to get your attention to it. I'd rather that be humans paid directly than any person/company being at least somewhat in the service of others. we don't know what we are not getting and at a collective level, how much culture challenging art never goes viral.

@wjmaggos Of course, no disagreement there. But I do think the threshold has never been lower and that is a good thing

@wjmaggos all things being equal, I put some of my music on youtube and without ads I’d get a few hundred views. I put a video of me replacing the head unit in my car and it got a few thousand views. It is what it is
