A friend of mine who has always worked in television (makeup, wardrobe) just got a new job that’s a lot better in pay and hours and I’m super happy for her. And it’s a job I didn’t even know existed. Basically makeup and wardrobe services but for going on a night out. Things like weddings, big galas. She meets with clients, rents clothes, has them altered. On the big day/night gets them all done up. Some people have a costume designer for their life!NYC has so many… things.

@futurebird that’s interesting! Never would have thought about that as a marketable service but that does make sense now that you say it.

I’d really enjoy a show about someone doing this job— but not for famous people or big events. No, let me see the *perfect* costume, concept sketches, hair and makeup for:* Ryan goes to the dog park in February.* Angela catches the train to Coney island.* Isis starts taking a pottery class at the community college. And it’s not about it being a makeover, this is important. Is about perfection of the ordinary. Functionality, context matching, making a mundane activity artful.

@futurebirdThat job sounds like an enormous amount of pressure to me. I hope it's $$$.

@futurebird it’s not something I could imagine using (or more to the point affording) more than a couple of times in my life but I love that it’s an option. I have weird proportions so special occasion clothing acquisition is a pain. Rather than having stacks of stressful shopping trips resulting in buying something I’ll not wear again because the fit isn’t quite right having someone track down the perfect rental items for me would be incredible.

@futurebird as someone who lives in T-shirts and jeans and is always anxious about What To Wear to anything vaguely formal, this would be worth every penny

@futurebird I was speaking with a customer representative on a work trip. He mentioned that his sister-in-law has a side gig of setting up a home for sleep overs for birthdays/other special events. Essentially they have tents, cots, and other decorations to create a really nice setup in the home. I would have never thought of that as a potential business.

@joannaholman The firm she works for is pretty old— it’s one of those things that used to be common in big cities. They depend on a clothing rental network. The rental people are cagey and only trust wardrobe services firms to rent their clothing (to be fair some of it’s really rare and expensive… dresses with insurance if you can imagine)But as extravagant as it sounds buying an outfit to be worn once is also extravagant and in a worse way IMO.

@futurebird I'm surprised that you haven't found a way yet to mention ants in this topic...Like how wings are exactly that for ant princesses ?

@futurebird This week's whiteboard question at the community college library is "what reality show would you want to be in?" I confess my reply was that we should make our own :P

@futurebird I've forgotten that that was even a thing. And there seem to be just a few in the field.
