I was feeling a little sad that the family of Tawny Frogmouths I’ve been watching grow up had moved on from their nest site, even if it wasn’t surprising due to over the fence of a primary school being suboptimal for creatures who sleep during the day. I was just walking in another part of the neighbourhood and spotted a Tawny. Could be one of my friends, but they look like they’re nesting so could also be a new family with a late group of babies which would be delightful. This is my first time spotting a Tawny in a new location without any assistance (up high and in low light no less). That feels like a major milestone towards being a skilled birder! #birds #birding #wildoz #wildlife #tawnyfrogmouth

My newest tawny frogmouth friend has stayed in the same spot so I’m hopeful that means she’s nesting and I’ll soon get to see another group of adorable muppets #birds #birding #wildoz #tawnyFrogmouth

I was starting to wonder if I was imagining one of the nearby Tawny Frogmouths could be nesting given it’s quite late in the baby season (the other tawny families around here fledged a month ago) and I wasn’t seeing much change at the nest. Going out in the super hot weather to check was rewarded. I was delighted to meet new local muppets! #birds #birding #wildlife #wildoz #TawnyFrogmouth

While staring up into a tree looking at the tawny frogmouth nest I’ve been watching for a while a stranger walking past told me about another group of them nearby. It’s not the first time this has happened, I’ve similarly bestowed knowledge of our tawny friends on others I’ve met while bird watching. Loving these birds is like participating in the world’s most delightful and cooperative treasure hunt #birds #birding #wildoz #wildlife #tawnyfrogmouth

@futurebird yes! They can be quite difficult to spot as they tend to sit high up on trees whose bark matches their feathers- I’ve only ever found them without help once. But they are quite common in many suburban areas of Australia. Almost all the photos in this thread were taken within walking distance of my house. I feel very blessed to have neighbourhood muppets!

@futurebird I feel like there’s definitely be a market for this. Translations of Japanese and Korean healing/cozy fiction (nice, low drama tales set in places like bookstores and cafes where there’s often a cat involved and people tend to gently learn things about themselves) have been a big hit in a bunch of western markets recently

@futurebird @aj they also put an Internet buttons on flip phones but the Internet access was 55 cents per 25kb so your life and visions of your destroyed financial future flashed before your eyes if you accidentally clicked it

At the Australian Open. It looks like a major tennis tournament, it’s actually a three week long neon blue fever dream. The gift store has a lot of cool things but it also has some absolute absurdities #ausopen #melbourne

Pro tip if you go to the Australian Open. Don’t sit on these seats. They’re a trap! They look so comfortable but they’re not and you might get injured and embarrass yourself to strangers trying to flail your way out. That would be awkward #ausopen

One of the many surreal things about the Australian Open is the amount of temporary construction. The place is full of two and even three story airconditioned fully furnished buildings that look like they’re permanent but weren’t here a month ago and won’t be here a month from now. Temples to consumerism destined to disappear when the cheers fall silent (But full respect to Chemist Warehouse for only charging outside world prices despite having an on-site monopoly on a bunch of essentials)#ausopen

Fun fact about the Australian Open: the digital courtside graphics aren’t superimposed onto the broadcast, they’re real screens that somehow can sustain being hit by a 200km an hour serve #ausopen

@futurebird @david_chisnall we need much better availability and pricing of content for that to become viable. A bunch of shows I’d like to watch and would pay to purchase individually aren’t available anywhere but streaming. I’m trying to pay for more music but the pricing on a lot is absurd. Albums on iTunes usually cost more than a months’s spotify subscription, one I wanted to buy the other day cost almost twice the monthly Spotify cost

@futurebird and they’d go to zoos to see them but the cats would never cooperate with being on display
