"There were 20,301 applicants on the Housing Register as at 31 December 2024, a decrease of 20.0 percent from this time last year, 31 December 2023."#NZMSD, 2024https://www.msd.govt.nz/about-msd-and-our-work/publications-resources/statistics/housing/housing-register.htmlHow did MSD do this? At a time when the NatACTs have;a) stopped public housing builds; https://www.interest.co.nz/public-policy/131771/government%E2%80%99s-plan-cut-k%C4%81inga-ora%E2%80%99s-debt-18-billion-will-halt-construction-newb) announced plans to sell off public houses;https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/04/01/govt-embarks-on-sale-of-900-state-houses-old-and-new/c) severely limited access to emergency housing;https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/government-was-warned-emergency-housing-crackdown-could-increase-homelessness/3Q32NDQ37JCI3GX6QF7CQMCIRM/(1/2)#housing #PublicHousing

A possible answer can be found in Max Rashbrooke's 2023 piece on the fire sales of public housing by previous NatACT governments;"... a government should be attributed a one-year post-election pipeline ..."https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/25-09-2023/did-national-really-just-simply-sell-off-state-housesIn other words, 2018 housing outcomes can be sheeted home to the Snapper Key's regime, while the huge reduction in people waiting for public housing can be attributed to the knock on effects of the last Labour-led government. Can't wait to see 2025 figures.(2/2)

Max Rashbrooke gave the NatACTs way too much credit back in 2023"... an incoming administration can hardly cancel signed contracts or halt work underway."https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/25-09-2023/did-national-really-just-simply-sell-off-state-housesIf only that were true.#MaxRashbrooke #governance

@strypey My gut reaction is that they do it by not putting people on the register in the first place, and reviewing the people on it to remove them from the register as ineligible. I doubt there is any significant increase in people getting in to social housing.
