@bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz I agree that free media is definitely better, but it should not be absolutely necessary for media to be free. You use software to do a job. In order for you to free you need to have full control over your software.Media is just something you look at for the purpose of entertainment. You don't need full control over it. It is frustrating, but not objectively unethical to impose restrictions on this.I do believe copyright reforms are needed as the current copyright system is too protective, for example I would suggest the following changes: * Everyone should have to the right to share all media non-commercially without restrictions. * Copyrights should last a maximum of like 15 years, similar to patents.

@SuperDicq Educational media is not entertainment and is often necessary for work. Yet sometimes you can't play it because you have the "wrong" equipment, or bexause of borders again. Even though you have paid the rightful owner their due.

@bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz We're talking about the context of video games here which is entertainment.Richard Stallman I believe defines all copyrighted works into three categories (not an exact quote, paraphrasing):1. Functional works, such as: software, but also educational material like recipes and manuals, etc. (This must all be free)2. Testimonial works, such as: opinion pieces, observations, scientific papers, historical documents (Needs to just be free to share, but not free to modify as modifying them would be spreading misinformation).3. Works of entertainment, such as artwork and music (Needs to be free to share non-commercially, but any other rights can be according to the author's wishes as this is a work of personal expression).

@bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz Like I don't see anything wrong with the idea that an artist can ask people to do not modify their artwork for limited time (current copyright law is way too long btw), so people can enjoy the original work as intended. And also to disallow commercial sale of the work so they can make some money themselves first. I don't think that's unreasonable.

@SuperDicq That isn't. But forbidding me from enjoying the media based on my current location and the location the media was "intended" for — is.

@bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz I totally agree. But this is usually done using DRM software. Which is again, a software freedom issue.

@bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz I believe that the sharing of any copyrighted work should always be allowed non-commercially. Copyright law was never intended to stop people from sharing works amongst each other and helping out their peers. The only reason why copyright exists is to encourage the creation of more works by letting the author prevent their work from being commercially sold by someone before they had a chance to do so themselves. If for example a certain work is not for sale in your country you should be allowed to obtain a copy non-commercially in my opinion.

@SuperDicq I purposefully avoided the topic of enforcement, as it, indeed, bleeds into software.I am only saying that the part that needs enforcement — region locks among them — are bullshit already.Bypassing this enforcement is possible and usually easy, but that id illegal. Copyright owners will scream that me using my lawfully obtained licensed copy of the media for noncommercial purpuses in a wrong country is PIRACY. That is BS, but still technically illegal.

@bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz I agree. Noncommercial use in general should never be illegal in my opinion.
