@cs Render unto Caesar... Or the Vatican could just make all that stuff free and then the tariffs would have no effect. They have more than enough to cover it.

@jecxjo @cs It's a satire piece. Says so right in the article. You can ask @tyn about the plenary indulgence he obtained a couple of weeks back, at the cost of several hours spent walking around Berlin, visiting churches and praying there. Not something that can be taxed in any way my mind is capable of understanding.

@tyn @jecxjo @publius it more closely it does read as satire. I wasn’t aware RNS published satire. I don’t see where it is clearly labeled…. Still looking.

@publius @jecxjo @cs a condition for receiving the indulgence is making a “meaningful donation“. These are usually tax deductible which is oc something Trump could get rid off with a felt tip. OTOH I’d argue getting your money back goes against the intention of making said donation in the first place, thereby violating the conditions for the indulgence. So not meeting the vatican’s conditions, hence no valid indulgence and without that there’d be nothing to levy taxes on.

@publius @jecxjo @cs Maybe Trump could just escalate further and simply confiscate church assets, arguing it was taking unfair advantage of Americans. That might be a napoleonic thing to do so definitely something he’d be fond of.

@tyn @jecxjo @cs I wouldn't say that. Napoleon was very proud of making the administrative apparatus of governments across Europe both interoperate and just plain work, which is strictly opposed to the orange guy's MO.

@jecxjo @publius @cs Well if he indeed has “the mind of a child” he’ll just pick what suits him I guess. A case of life imitating art, if you can call Spock’s Brain that.
