I've been thinking lately about PopOS, the last proper release was 22.04, the distro has been waiting on COSMIC to be finished but the distro space has changed a lot since the last release, now we have Bazitte, PikaOS, Nobara all competing in a very similar market.

When PopOS does have a proper new release that isn't just one of the COSMIC alpha releases, I'm of curious to see what place it has in the market, what sort of reception it's going to get. If it's going to go back to being a big recommendation or if it won't have the same hype

@BrodieOnLinux I feel like PopOS is operating closer to being a Windows alternative than Bazzite et al, that distinction might keep it on peoples lists, it's 2nd to SteamOS generic release whenever that happens on my list at least.

@BrodieOnLinux I tough about recommending someone PopOS for replacing the OEM shipped Dell Ubuntu 20.04 LTS that came with the laptop they bought about two weeks ago but changed my mind due to it being so outdated. The system broke itself on the first update and wouldn't boot at all with the newer kernel because of hardware incompatibilities. Those could only be fixed by actually reinstalling the OS using 24.10, the only release of Ubuntu that has a compatible kernel for a machine that ships with an LTS release. NVIDIA drivers (the laptop had an RTX 3050) and GNOME have improved A LOT since then and his setup required using multiple monitors under Wayland, so... I'd say we're in need of a new LTS release including all of those improvements and fixes!

@BrodieOnLinuxI can't hope anything else than System76 sales grow so big they can build their own infrastructure with their own ways to do the things, which could be shown as a proof of consept for normies.

@BrodieOnLinux I am curious as well. When cosmic was announced I have switched to Fedora, which I always wanted to try and I saw it as a last opportunity to really try something else (was happy with PopOS), but now, honestly, I will likely still use Fedora, its super stable, and I will try its Cosmic spin.

@BrodieOnLinux I just want to use the non-compositor stuff of the DE like their login screen and taskbar in other Wayland compositors like Niri or Hyprland

@BrodieOnLinux I have been recommending Pop since 2018, but I stopped lately... The 22.04 version does not hold-up anymore, and Cosmic won't be mature for a while. I earn a living with my computer, I can't rely on an experimental DE for production, and I need an updated OS... I am trying Debian 12 at the moment... Not bad at all! I do miss the tweaks System76 had made over Gnome though!
