I'm furious at the local grocery store! I buy many things from them, often every week ... but they buy nothing, not one thing from me!You may mutter that the grocery has not need for services such as: math education, questionable short stories, or advice about ants... but I think this is incorrect. You may mutter that services aren't even included in trade deficits but I don't care!I'm putting a tariff on the grocery until they correct this horrible trade deficit.

@futurebird honestly they could probably make their store more ant friendly. They might not want your advice on that, but who are they to choose what they want?

@futurebird I didn't know you did math education! That's something I do too, but only for fun these days.Somehow an ant got into the bedroom and kept crawling on me a couple of nights ago. I eventually turned the light on to see what it was, agonized a bit, but did terminate its little life, because brushing it off repeatedly hadn't worked and I didn't want to wake my wife.I felt bad, still do. Bless me, mother, for I have sinned.

@futurebird You may mutter that the grocery has no need for services such as: math educationI don't think I would argue that about most grocery stores I've visited, to be honest.

I spend $190 every two weeks and they spend nothing so it is a 100 percent trade deficit. Therefore their tariff is 50 percent. So, if they wish to sell me a box of crackers and some frozen spinach they must also pay me at the same time half of the price of these items. That is cut the price in two.If they would simply invest in one of my stories or some "Ant Services" it need not be this way. I'm tired of being taken advantage of like this. (Also very hungry, but let's not dwell on that)

@davidnjoku Since it is now a 50 percent tariff that would mean everything would be effectively ... free. Which seems like it might be a problem, but they are only bringing this suffering on themselves.

@pms Everything it place way too high up! And often the very best items are in the most annoying plastic boxes. The ants, however, are not always good about paying for the good that they buy. I don't know if they really understand that concept although I've tried my best to teach them they still seem to just wander off with whatever they want. But, still.

@futurebird I think this is wrong. If they sell you a box of crackers YOU have to pay the government 50% if the price on top of paying the grocery store. I guess you could try to haggle at the checkout so your tax burden isn't so high? This is a really stupid thing you're doing to yourself. Why would anyone do this. ๐

@futurebird not quite - believe it or not, it's actually dumber than this!A tariff is a tax a country imposes on itself. So, it would actually be "I'm going to insist that the grocery store charge me $285 for the same stuff (and give the $95 difference to the local billionaire) until the store decides to start buying things from me!"

@futurebird "The ants! They come crawling to me now. Because they've been getting away with bad things for so long, ripping us off! But Trump stoped it. Coming into our house, nobody knows where they are coming from!Taking tiny grains of sugar back to their nest. To their queen. I call her "Queenie". She likes those sugar granules. Nobody uses that word now. But the ripoff stops today! I put a strong tariff on ants. If Little Queenie wants our sugar, she's going to have to make a deal!"

@futurebird, I'm sorry, but that's not quite how it works, surely?Don't you have to tax yourself an extra 24% on every purchase in the grocery store until they purchase services in equal amount from you?

@futurebird I find it interesting is that the "reciprocal" tariffs, which Trump claims he is just responding to, are not tariffs at all. What they've done is calculate the trade imbalance, then levied a tariff in the same amount. It's like measuring the length of your shoelaces to decide how much to pay for a carton of eggs.

@futurebird idk if it's the same grocery store I'm thinking of but I need it. I'm sure they understand it's for the well being and food security of my building and they like me very much, it's in everyone's best interest if it stops belonging to that ungrateful owner who just happened to get it for cheap decades ago

@futurebird And how much do we spend on the government without any reciprocation? A lot!Actually, we do get a lot of government services, but they don't come in a form we can easily account for, so I'm just going to arbitrarily say the value is $0. And services don't count anyhow.

@futurebird Huh... that sounds like a good savings plan - every time you spend at the grocery, you tax yourself and deposit some percentage of your grocery bill into savings?I mean I know that wasn't the idea - but that sounds like something someone would cook up to suggest for folks that have trouble staying on budget or saving.

@futurebird and just so we are clear on how a #conservativeTariffTax works; your children, with the allowance they earn for working around the house, will have to pay you that tariff tax for every glass of milk they drink until you get a cow in the back yard. You can buy one with all the extra income you will have from the tariff.#democracy is more than voting!
