i'm really excited to show https://compost.party to the world! it's a web server running on an old, broken phone, getting energy from the sun using one of those portable solar chargers that you may also have lying around.it's a real oddity and a real beauty

it runs @postmarketOS, so thanks to everybody who contributes there. it's really nice to have people who try to understand these devices and allow us to take them beyond walled gardens and planned obsolescence.also thanks @paupowpow for designing the web page and convincing me to finally show it around

the phone is connected via wifi to a residential internet connection and runs on its own battery. some of the sensors are working as well, so it's very non-web-server-like. it's made out of scraps that were lying around and are now turned into something new.at the moment it hosts https://links.compost.party which contains some of the links that inspired me. but i'm very open for ideas! if you have something you'd like to run on it, please write me

@computersandblues@post.lurk.orgI once intended to host a Gemini capsule on original iPhone. Unfortunately, something's wrong with wireless adapter in it: cellular works fine, but Wifi… sometimes even the switch to turn it on doesn't show up. After a reboot it might, but in a minute it's gone again. I've even disassembled it, but couldn't find any obvious issues.Sad. It might be fun 😅

@m0xEE what you're describing happens on iOS? i'm sure it wuld be fun! you could also use the cellular network and forward traffic from another device.

@computersandblues@post.lurk.orgYeah, it's iOS and I have gcc on it and all the tools, so I'd probably be able to build something minimal like gmid. It might even be a software problem and I can reflash it, but I think I won't be able to reinstall Cydia as all the repos are gone. Cellular connection is always an option, but having only that to control it might be tricky. In any case, currently gemini://m0xEE.Net is served from an old Genesi EfikaMX nettop — which is also ARM and only a tad bit more performant than the original iPhone, but it has more storage space and USB ports, which come in handy. Using solar power would be great, but I'm afraid it's not sunny enough here 😅
