"Dot Jones - wife of New Zealand First MP Shane Jones - has been assaulted at Auckland Airport.A spokesperson for the minister said Jones and his wife were waiting for a flight, when he was verbally abused and his wife assaulted."https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/557310/dot-jones-wife-of-mp-shane-jones-assaulted-at-auckland-airportThis is deeply disturbing. Whatever we might think of Shame Jones and his bargain basement politics, there's absolutely no excuse for taking it out on his whānau. It was wrong when people harassed Metiria Turei's whānau, and it's wrong now.

@strypey I agree with your view, of course. But I also note the failure of many politicians to condemn the abuse Ardern's partner and child received. This abuse doesn't happen in a vacuum.

@strypey given NZFs relationship with VFF, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more.

@paulhellyer @strypey Don't even have to look that far back... some absolute vermin were having a go at Benjamin Doyle's child just last week.

@paulhellyer> the abuse Ardern's partner and child received@Daveosaurus> absolute vermin were having a go at Benjamin Doyle's child just last weekThis is all equally worrying. But I feel like my condemnation of such behaviour has more impact when the people being abused are whānaunga of a politician I regularly lambast. Because it can't then be written off as partisan point-scoring, as it can be when it's the whānau of politicians I'm more sympatico with.

@felix > given NZFs relationship with VFF, I'm surprised this doesn't happen moreThat's a cheap shot. I've got ex-Greens friends who support VFF. They didn't harass politicians' whānaunga when they supported the Greens, and they don't now. This is not a partisan issue, and I don't see any value in trying to make it one.

@strypey @Daveosaurus That's a fair point and one I would have advocated a couple of years ago. But these days I bet the right won't care a fig if the condemnation of this behaviour comes from those who would usually lambast those politicians. I guess I am tired of trying to be reasonable ("when they go low, we go high"). That hasn't turned out well at all, quite the opposite in fact.

@strypey @paulhellyer I wasn't disagreeing at all - just adding a bit of context.

@strypey @paulhellyer It looks to me that the experiment was run in about 2022-2023. "Going low" won, much to the detriment of Aotearoa.

@strypey It looks like the wheels are beginning to fall off this story. “His nose hit my palm"? What was her palm doing in his face in the first place?

(2/?)We've had about a decade of the centre-right and some factions of the liberal left demonising anyone they disagree with as "Nazis". Trying to use governments ("hate speech" laws) and corporate gatekeepers ("Trust and Safety ") and sometimes both (Christchurch Call) to suppress speech they disagree with. Attacking anyone who stands up for freedom of expression as Nazi sympathisers.Despite being crypto-fascist in many ways, this was meant to prevent the growth of fascist movement.

(3/3)Some of us have been pointing out that a major part of fascist group psychology is a cult of victimhood. We've been saying that these attempts to suppress fascism, as well as the performative social media threats to punch anyone self-styled "antifascists" disagree with 'coz Nazis', would actually help fascist movements grow.So, who was right? Have fascists been defanged and democracy enriched? Or are fascists now in charge of all the world's superpowers, and many of the lesser powers?

@Daveosaurus > “His nose hit my palm"? What was her palm doing in his face in the first place?It's right there in the article; "She told the Herald she went to place her hand between the two and told the man to go away, and his nose hit her palm."https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/557310/dot-jones-wife-of-mp-shane-jones-says-she-was-assaulted-at-auckland-airportYou seem to be implying that a guy started arguing with Shame Jones, and his wife hit the guy. At the airport. On camera. If I agree that would be disgraceful if it happened, but it seems ... unlikely.
