a lot of good programmers develop a healthy instinct to ask "why did they solve the problem this way?" when looking at unfamiliar code. vibe-coded codebases completely upend that

"chesterton's fence" gets weirder when the answer can be "a fence was included because comparable roads were likely to contain a fence"

maybe that's a trade-off worth making—though I think nobody is making it deliberately, it's just the new world we live in. it's a shame because I liked when understanding context was worthwhile

@xor I wonder if governments have started seeding GitHub with repos full of backdoored code to increase the likelihood it will end up in gen AI-produced code.

@copiesofcopies @xor holds with the rhetoric and goals of LLM-generated text in general. increasing the cost of tracing a text's provenance, and thereby increasing the cost of understanding whether a text does what it says it does, is 100% an authoritarian practice

@aparrish that’s interesting. My intuition is that this was not what the people making LLMs set out to do, but I see the utility to authoritarians.

@copiesofcopies i don't necessarily think the goals of like char-rnn experiments in the mid-2010s were authoritarian, but imo the goals of the people making 2020s venture-funded foundation models definitely are (sometimes explicitly, e.g. altman and andreesen, sometimes implicitly)
