Porn is obviously a bit of a salacious content category, but the fact that multiple US states are passing laws to filter and modify the web from there is a dangerous path we're going down. Grateful for @404mediaco reporting here https://www.404media.co/popular-porn-site-warns-texas-users-health-and-human-services/

The stated motivation for these restrictions is protecting children, which in a shocking coincidence is also behind the widespread banning of books in many of these states. The idea that these laws will start and stop with pornography doesn't seem likely.

@jerry it was allowed until last April! https://www.sbsolver.com/h/telnetI used to enter it slightly annoyed at its inclusion, so I guess there is balance in all things

@jerry the word list is i would say ~*surprisingly*~ contentious. i know the editor personally (through crossword stuff) and he takes it very seriously and had to take a step back from social media because people (not you, to be clear!) are like, VICIOUS about it

I know i've been talking to my friends in europe too much because my train is delayed today and I had the very brief thought "at least i'll get some money back!"

If it doesn't have an RSS feed it's not a podcast. Spotify could never have been a good steward of "podcasting" because they've never been in the podcasting game

how is ebook formatting still uniformly so bad? footnotes are a mess, "end of book" markers are inconsistent, illustrations are virtually always a fiasco. is it still just such an afterthought, or is it somehow an impossible problem?

I love books and I may be something of a print fetishist but it just seems like such a crazy gap in quality between the print and digital products, this many years in

I didn't set any new PRs for NYT crosswords in 2023; that's okay, I figured I'd probably plateaued on speed....but I just blew my Monday PR out of the water on 1/1/24

this is such an important story that does not get enough attention because the "porn" headline is so salacious. individual US states legislating access to parts of the web is a big deal and only likely to get worse https://www.404media.co/north-carolina-montana-pornhub-blocked-vpn/

it's sort of astonishing just how bad every piece of "kiosk" software is. bought a train ticket, checked in at the airport, using my seatback display, all on just the most eye-wateringly terrible UI and UX

a lot of good programmers develop a healthy instinct to ask "why did they solve the problem this way?" when looking at unfamiliar code. vibe-coded codebases completely upend that

"chesterton's fence" gets weirder when the answer can be "a fence was included because comparable roads were likely to contain a fence"

maybe that's a trade-off worth making—though I think nobody is making it deliberately, it's just the new world we live in. it's a shame because I liked when understanding context was worthwhile

Do folks have recommendations for books on very early personal computing history? I'm thinking mostly the 1970s. I've read a lot of computing history but don't mind "obvious" suggestions if you've got them!
