I wonder if you could make a new BASIC ROM for the IBM 5150 that'd change the internal language to Python instead

32 kilobytes of ROM for the BASIC. That'd be a tad tricky to fit python in. even micropython is over a megabyte

maybe we make an ISA card to bank-switch a couple megabytes of micropython ROM, and just have the code in the BASIC ROM handle talking to it

@foone https://github.com/philhassey/tinypy mentions 64k, but that seems to be target size for the binary, not the total memory needed to get it functional.

@foone I remember porting an early Python interpreter to the PS2. It barely fit, even trimming everything down a lot (ints and floats instead of longs and doubles, etc).It was also very slow because it beat the poor 2-way-associative data cache to pieces :-(
