@gabriel >E2EE hampers legitimate government surveillanceYou know it's a proprietary article right from there - no government surveillance is ever legitimate.>It prevents helpful backdoors>we believe there is a middle-ground to be found in the laws of mathematics.>keys to decrypt your data will be given only to the good guysWe're hitting levels of proprietary that shouldn't even be possible.>The companies behind those services rely on collecting as much of your personal data as possible in order to constantly produce exciting new innovations.>Without mass data collection, how would you get personalized ads for weeks about different new sneakers, because you bought that pair on Amazon yesterday?Hmm, it seems that it's satire.

@gabriel you have to be able to talk to a person without a third party listening, on Internet it is possible by encryptionthat's basic privacy

@Suiseiseki @gabriel I quite enjoyed this line:> It's true that end-to-end encryption also protects the lives of journalists, whistleblowers, and human-rights activists from those few governments which are *actually* oppressive, but these edge-cases should not be used as an excuse to hinder legitimate governments like in the US or the UK.I'm guessing "those few governments which are *actually* oppressive" (their italics) means the governments of those few countries don't have an active US military presence?

@gabriel This article seems totally parody. However, I would argue that E2EE is widely unnecessary in most of the esoteric, self-hosted circles and F/LOSS protocols many of us here use. People would argue that "security through obscurity" is bogus, but what real benefit are we getting from things like E2EE when it's 3--5 people chatting over a few private, self-hosted XMPP servers, for example?

@adiz@mtl.jinxian.casa I've had that thought as well. The reason people push Signal so hard is metadata. Just like Tor they want you to use it so the crowd benefits. It makes me wonder if that's part of the game theory as to why there's no "perfect" messenger.

@gabriel Also, some things are just overkill. Like when content is already E2EE via things like TLS/SSL but then, on top of that, some system or protocol relies on bespoke cryptographic encryption keys to decrypt messages within a client. The messages were already encrypted in transit! It just begins to get a little silly, especially when all this can be totally defeated by an actor gaining physical access to your device. There is a level of dramatically diminishing returns in each increased complexity.

@gabriel XMPP ticks all the boxes I need out of a messenger, personally. Especially in how lightweight and performant it is. And, messages are transmitted encrypted and you can thereafter have things like OMEMO.
