I am writing this from a Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu, as part of my exploration of getting away from big tech. The experience so far is... a bit rough. Obviously, the Pi 4 is under powered as a modern desktop, but also lots of software doesn't work at all. I can't get Krita to run for example. Is that an ARM thing?

It's not all bad of course! I quite like Ubuntu and could get used to it just fine. I'm using Vivaldi more seriously and I'm liking the features.

@OrionKidder Because I have a Pi spare, and all my other computers are ARM Macs.

@john - I have never tried to run it on ARM, but on Intel/AMD Krita needs a decent bit of RAM (at leasr 4gb, better with 8gb or more ime) to function smoothly, as well as a decent gpu, and well supported touch displays (such as Wacom) if you are going to use it for stylus drawing input as well. You can get away with less and it will still run, but that task is a bit ambitious for even the most powerful Raspberry Pi.

@john Why are you trying to run desktop software on an embedded device? I think this is a "wrong tool for the job" kinda thing here. The point of the rpi is to make embedded development easier. No offense intended, but not sure how to put it otherwise. đ

@TotalSonic Yeah, I realise it would not run well (I'm not actually planning to use this Pi as my computer) but it doesn't even launch, and its icon is the generic gear in the app launcher.Perhaps the Linux ARM ecosystem isn't as advanced as I thought it might be?

@john - with ARM, you generally need to use a distro that is optimized for it, as well as that has been specifically ported for the device. I use Ubuntu Touch on some ARM smartphones and tablets, but generally the smoothest apps on it are written to be native for the OS, or it uses containers to run Android and Linux desktop apps, for which compatibility can be hit or miss. For Mac ARM there has been really good progress from Asahi Linux though https://asahilinux.org/

@john @TotalSonic It's available on the pi and should workhttps://snapcraft.io/install/krita/raspbianPerhaps Ubuntu is the culprit? I would suggest RpiOS for the Rpi due to optimizations and perhaps (?) hardware support and platform specific kernel patches etc

@apodoxus because it is the only free computer I have. I was not expecting any of this to run well.

@stags @TotalSonic yes that is what I installed. Doesnât run. I suspect it hasnât installed the arm version.

@john Generally speaking, ARM desktop is not a thing, although it can be done with a lot of work. I used to run PowerPC for my desktop. You have a bigger problem though with the RPi not just being ARM but really not being built for that purpose at all.

@john @TotalSonic We can try and debug/workaround but I generally blame Ubuntu for raspberry pi in this case.If you have a spare SD card or ssd I suggest try it out on raspberry pi os

@FlorianG no, itâs more that I intend to use it in my hypothetical future setup. Which wonât be on a Raspberry Pi 4. đ
