There's a zine-maker who wrote little zine about insects that I like to include in gifts or just give to people I know. From their perspective how would a request: "Could you offer a bulk discount on a large number of copies?" feel? I'd hope it'd seem exciting and flattering. But, I also just want to get as many copies as I can at once. So thinking about if it's OK.I don't know how time consuming they are to make. Maybe they aren't even priced to account for that. Hard to know with art.

@futurebird I'd probably start with "I really like to give away this zine, and I'd like to get (number) copies from you. Is that a thing you could do, and if so what would you charge?" They're not a commercial supplier, you're not negotiating a contract with them.

@futurebird you could even ask if you could print your own copies. Offer something for it.

It's worth asking, especially with ballpark numbers for how many you want. They might say "no" for various reasons, but it's always nice to know your stuff is wanted; emphasise that and I don't think they should be offended.@futurebird

@futurebird I’d define “large number” in your initial email. Everyone’s idea of large is different. I would also give a timeline, because they might say no to next week but yes to next month. Unusual requests can be stressful, be kind by being clear about what you are looking for.

@Rhodepvd Thanks! I almost forgot to mention the timeline (which is very flexible) but I can see how that might matter a lot.

Oh this is the zine if you are curious. It's really charming. I've also realized that their "sliding scale" pricing is part of what made me freaked out about doing this. I understand people do that so more people can buy the thing ... but it always stresses me out since it reminds me of tipping. I just pick the middle price and hope that is fair. https://www.etsy.com/listing/864833924

@futurebird Thanks for including the link, just bought one! Also, their “nature is anti feminist” is fascinating (and deeply feminist)
