@Ricardus I think part of my problem is that I've never really been able to tell which was which.

@Ricardus Well, names are supposed to do that. But names are, to me, like primary keys in a database: they're opaque, so you can use them, but you can't see them. As a result, it often takes me weeks, even months, to learn the name of a person I see frequently.

@Professor_Stevens Me too, actually, unless I find a way to associate their names to something common or someone I know.

@Ricardus I've read many times that association is a good memory aid. Like, if someone's name is "Saul," and they are a tall person, you can note that "Saul" rhymes with "tall," and it helps you remember the name next time you meet them.Interestingly, it seems to work even if the association is absurd. Like, if Saul is short, and you note that short is not tall, "Saul" rhymes with "tall" in "not tall."It's making the association at all that seems to matter.

@Professor_Stevens yep. And if I can't associate it takes me forever to learn their name.

@Ricardus But that's the thing the Psychology Department is telling me we can always do it. See, they claim it doesn't matter much if the association makes any real sense. Somehow, spending the brain resources needed to make any association at all helps embed the associated parts into your memory. So, if see a person and you think, "His name's Xiaoyu. I bet his favorite food is burritos. Xiaoyu is a burrito man," next time you see him, you'll think, "The burrito man, Xiaoyu!"Or so they say.

@Ricardus Oh, surely not. Psychology is a statistical science. Each of us is just an individual data point. Still, I try what I can. Some things work. Some things don't. Some things work if I work at them, but some things I don't work at.We're all unique.
