@danirabbit @gamingonlinux Meanwhile, Apple moving in the opposite direction, planning to resume advertising at the Nazi bar. In a few short years I’ve gone from loving Apple to looking forward to dancing on their grave.

@strypey @danirabbit @gamingonlinux It was never a cult. Their products were genuinely better in ways that mattered to me. Some still are.

@freediverx > It was never a cultThe vehemence with which I've seen Mac/ iThing users reframe for Apple's abuse of them as positives fits no other explanation. @pluralistic wrote a good piece about this a while back;https://pluralistic.net/2024/03/22/reality-distortion-field/#three-trillion-here-three-trillion-there-pretty-soon-youre-talking-real-money> Their products were genuinely better in ways that mattered to meEvery cult offers genuine value at the outset, otherwise they'd never get new recruits.@danirabbit @gamingonlinux

@freediverx> The root of the problem was never Apple, but the capitalistic system in which they operateSure, but that doesn't absolve Apple of responsibility for their enshittifying business practices. Particularly because we have and can stop shitty behaviour like this without having to complete an anticapitalist revolution first (GDPR, DMA, anti-monopoly prosecutions, etc).@danirabbit @gamingonlinux

@strypey @pluralistic @danirabbit @gamingonlinux While Apple, like any other company, had its share of sycophantic supporters, most Apple fans simply appreciated the qualities that differentiated them from the competition. Arguing in favor of qualities you value is not the same as blindly supporting a company when they do something wrong.

@strypey @danirabbit @gamingonlinux Many Apple customers criticized them on those points, myself included. Any mature person with some emotional intelligence and critical thinking skills should be capable of admiring a person or company while condemning them for their faults. The real world is all about contradictions and ambiguities.

@freediverx > While Apple, like any other company, had its share of sycophantic supportersIt's my experience, and obviously Cory's, that Apple had a much higher share of uncritical cheerleaders than any other tech company, and for much longer, well past the point where the abuses were public knowledge. But I admit this is hard to quantify, and it's probably not worth quibbling over at this point. @pluralistic @danirabbit @gamingonlinux

@strypey @pluralistic @danirabbit @gamingonlinux Apple pioneered an ethos of product design based on quality and user experience which contrasted with the business models of their competitors who focused on low prices subsidized with surveillance capitalism. As we move into end stage capitalism, everything we cherished is now falling apart, including Apple.

@freediverx > Apple pioneered an ethos of product design based on quality and user experience 1) This stopped being a defensible position in 2007 with the release of the first iThings, and the various digital handcuffs and DataFarming features included2) The wording of this post reads just like a quote from Apple's reputation laundering department. This is common, and is one of the reasons people like @pluralistic and I characterise Apple fandom as being cult-like
