@ethicalrevolution @musicbrainz @jamcoop @mirlo @benpate @freebliss @mizkirsten @funkwhale @music @hello @subvertworld I don't think artists can make money from selling songs online. I know I've never been able to. I'm beginning to think that, more and more, selling online is a scam, and always was.

@shanesemler @ethicalrevolution @musicbrainz @jamcoop @mirlo @benpate @freebliss @funkwhale @music @hello @subvertworld No doubt you've got a lot of company there. I'd love to see that change. But I'm also really interested in what other ways artists think would be better in terms of financial support for their work.

That said, it probably works out for Metallica to be a lifestyle brand, but that’s not going to fly for most Indie artists. This is a hard nut to crack, but I have a feeling that large groups of people can be brilliant and surprising when we work together. And I believe this community will find some interesting solutions.@mizkirsten @shanesemler @ethicalrevolution @musicbrainz @jamcoop @mirlo @freebliss @funkwhale @music @hello @subvertworld

@benpate bands used to make pennies on the dollar in the olden days of record sales (once they’d paid off their advance to the record labels). If more people paid artists directly instead of giving it to Spotify, it could amount to something non negligeable. We’re in a cultural battle towards making it cool to bypass the toxic middlemen of today and yesteryear, seems to me.@mizkirsten @shanesemler @ethicalrevolution @musicbrainz @jamcoop @mirlo @freebliss @funkwhale @music @hello @subvertworld

Yes. To add.. there will always be middlemen. But they can be made less toxic by the open marketplace. In this example, the Fediverse. As open source software, Bandwagon, Mirlo, and Faircamp are a #BillionaireProof hedge against #Enshitification. If one ever tried to become toxic, you (or your cousin) can always fire up your own instance. @sknob @mizkirsten @shanesemler @ethicalrevolution @mirlo @freebliss @music @hello

@benpate absolutely ! Didn’t mean to even remotely imply bw and the other emerging platforms were toxic middlemen (and women :). More like partners and co-enablers.@mizkirsten @shanesemler @ethicalrevolution @mirlo @freebliss @music @hello

And I didn't read that into your comment, either. Just that.. there currently ARE toxic middlemen out there now (boo!) and we believe open source is the way forward (yay!)You're awesome, sknob!@sknob @mizkirsten @shanesemler @ethicalrevolution @mirlo @freebliss @music @hello

@benpate @sknob @mizkirsten @shanesemler @ethicalrevolution @mirlo @freebliss @music @hello what if there could be a decentralized Spotify with an open protocol for fiat transfer? @Interledger is working on the money part AFAIK.

@wjmaggos @benpate @sknob @mizkirsten @ethicalrevolution @mirlo @freebliss @music @hello @Interledger People are trying to bolt on solutions to a problem that shouldn't be fixed, it should be torn down. Capitalism is the cause of all of this. It is a cancer. You don't put an antibacterial salve on a malignant tumour.

@shanesemler I think the concentration of wealth is probably the greatest impediment to the good life for everybody. I think the focus on money over lives well lived is a problem.but when people say they oppose capitalism, I'm never sure what they mean. trade is good. there is value in using greed to push people to find better solutions for life's problems.it feels like a creature that can't be forever eliminated, that can do good work, but will destroy us if we don't constantly fight it.

@wjmaggos Trade isn't the same as the monster that is neoliberal capitalism. Capitalism in general creates devastating boom and bust cycles, and everyone just throws up their hands and says, that's just the way it is, it can't be helped. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps! That is what capitalists want. They want you to believe capitalism is a force of nature that can't be contained. It's a lie and I don't accept it.
