Well, I got my second new radio (this one actually new) and even tried a couple of short transmissions tonight. So far I haven't picked up a single thing all day tho'. I was definitely worried about anything this small/portable being an _issue_, and I kinda hate to say it but that's really bearing out right now. That is, assuming it's working. I mean, it acts like it's working, and it's definitely working for receiving on weather and FM bands, so leagues ahead of the last one. xD#HamRadio #AmateurRadio #KK7ZLU

@moira what radio did you get? I assume one of the low-cost HTs? I would suggest programming in some local repeaters (which probably have very little traffic most of the time) and searching for details of any scheduled nets. Then tune in during one of those and see what you can hear.

@moira see if you can hit NE7MC in Kenmore. You should at least be able to get a beep out of it. Or look at https://www.repeaterbook.com/repeaters/location_search.php?loc=King&type=county&state_id=53 and try some others that might be near you, or at high elevation. You should be able to get a couple of miles line of sight with 5 watts.

@literatesavant yeh it's a Baofeng (which once I'm out warranty will be relabelled Beifong ^_^ ) F8HP Pro because of my geography. I wanted that little extra power because hey, you never know what might make the difference ^_^I was planning on trying some relays today, I was looking around trying to find relay lists and there are _too_ many? So having one pointed out is a help ty ^_^

I picked up some real clear digitally noises at 420.000 Mhz so I'm pretty sure I was picking up somebody's slowscan TV transmission but idk for sure(don't even really know if it was actually TV at all xD )#HamRadio #AmateurRadio #KK7ZLU

@moira ...but if you're hearing bzzt on FM, they ARE talking. DStar, P25, C4FM digital voice... which I find to be fairly useless. You get more radio art info from analogue FM voice. You can tell when a station is weak into a repeater or if the repeater is weak to you. You can even tell the cause of a weak sig eg mobile picket fencing. What you DO get from digital voice is chat rooms connected to far flung stations who didn't send a signal a great distance. May as well be internet.

@weezmgk yeh that's what I meant, I don't care much about digital modes honestlyI need to know how they work because part of this is emergency prep but in terms of what's actually interesting it's analogue all the way because yeahi, too, already have t3h internets xD#HamRadio #AmateurRadio #KK7ZLU
