Mick Aston is an interesting person. He's an archaeologist educator and TV showmaker and responsible for the concept behind the UK show "Time Team." Aston's primary goal was to make archaeology interesting to the general public, not just through the show, but by having ordinary people participate in "three day digs." Time Team achieved many of these goals and people often say "we need Time Team in America"And there have been attempts. But, none of these have caught on like the original.

Some of the reasons people give for "Time Team USA" not catching on or working in the same way drive me batty."There isn't enough history in the USA" (colonialist BS. get out NOW.)"Americans aren't intellectual or curious enough to enjoy educational TV" (OK this might be true but still get OUT.)I think the real reason is the US reboots don't center the original mission of citizen archeology. What we need is our own Mick Aston. And we have our own Mick Aston. His name is Milo Rossi!

@futurebird Even the original was cancelled. Mick Aston is missed! I have to admit though that my favourite from the programme was Phil Harding.

@rayhindle Phil is more fun, but that man just wants to drink beer and nap flint. And to be fair that's understandable. Aston was the force behind involving the community, getting ordinary people digging. A lot of stuff that didn't always relate to making the "show" better but had more to do with education. That core was key to making it work in ways that other documentaries and TV shows didn't. Think about the word of mouth factor. Thousands of people can say they "helped with Time Team"

@Mayabotics This just makes the project more needed, more important. But, I think you get that. I know the location of the little grave yard where my ancestors who were slaves Georgia are buried. Near it are the houses they built and lived in farming tobacco. To do archaeology in the US we must confront US history. Massive earth works being forgotten from deep history, painful stories in recent history. We like to pretend the continent was just untamed wilderness and that is a lie.

@futurebird US remakes appear generally problematic.Firstly whoever makes them lacks all imagination.Second they have no faith in their audience's ability to understand the original. An #enshittification process of long standing.

@futurebird I love Milo Rossi. I love seeing young creators like him doing educational and science material on YouTube and TikTok, countering the flood of bullshit misinformation. Others of that ilk I love are Lynsey Nikole, Forrest Valkai and Mamadou Ndiaye (Casual Geographic.)
