Copy text or an image on your laptop. Paste it on your phone. Copy on your phone? Paste on your iPad. I don't know when Apple started this feature but it's more magical than "Apple intelligence" or any of the other things they've been going on about. If you use an iphone and mac/iPad and are NOT using copy paste like this you are *missing out* on one of the few things that make "the ecosystem uwu" worth it.

Please don't tell me to change OS. I get my computers free from work. I might not get an iPhone again the next time I need to buy a phone. I'm a little sour on them and might get one of those anti-social eink phones. But, really just not getting a new phone for a long time is as good as switching. And then I get to keep doing the copy paste trick. It fills me with child-like wonder every time. Showed it to my husband who isn't into in tech much and he said I was a wizard.

@Tak That has been going on for a long time. You are not in a private space if you use things like google docs, microsoft or the apple ecosystem. That they neglect the way that such things could make their tools more useful and don't even hype up the benefits like universal clipboard just show how far the focus has drifted from making tools for the people who use the software to making software that turns us all into tools.

@futurebird No, I get it, but stuff that's in the clipboard is very often sensitive information like passwords and second-factor codes that I explicitly do not want going across the network in ways that I don't control. That said, I've been looking since I wrote the previous reply, and it looks like they actually considered security from a user perspective for once (I honestly expected it to just go through icloud), and it looks like it's probably okish (% the thing this guy talks about regarding clipboards being generally insecure)

@futurebird I like this, and the way my AirPods just switch seamlessly among my devices 99% of the time.

@futurebird I use it a lot for urls and photos. There’s a similar feature, I don't know if it's using the same mechanism under the hood, but I can start composing a toot on my phone (Ivory) and a little ivory icon shows on my Mac's dock, click that and the composer moves over to the mac along with text/photos. Same kind of thing if I'm viewing a web page on the phone, a safari icon shows in dock and clicking that brings up same page on the mac.

@futurebird I always thought the whole appeal of "Apple ecosystem" was a load of crap, but now I use KDE Connect which has this "copy here, paste there" feature and some other tidbits and...I understand completely. Reading something in the phone that would be better in your computer? Sure can do!Oh I received info in my email that is in my monitor, but I need to put it in an app? Easy as pie! It's so pleasant, damn. Glad I'm not missing it anymore, but damn the Apple people had/have it good!

@futurebird I really feel uncomfortable with clipboard data going across the "cloud." I'd rather save a picture or text file and use LocalSend (which runs on everything ) to transfer to whatever I want it on. Then only data I want to send ever touches the network and it is LAN only.

@futurebird The experience of using an iPad alongside a Mac is also very smooth and would definitely have blown my mind in the days when a 16Mhz Mac/SE was my daily driver.Use it as an extra screen? ok. Use it as its own device but use the Mac's keyboard and trackpad? Also ok. And as you say... Copy and paste at will. And can we talk AirPods? It is very good at smoothly switching to whatever device has my focus, then switching again if I make or need to take a call.

@nazokiyoubinbou I don't think not using the feature protects one from any "danger" it might pose. But this might be why they don't talk about it more... because these companies don't want us to think about how exposed all data on the cloud are. Which is sad to me. Because then you have the worst of both worlds. Your data are exposed, but you get none of the convince that "cloud computing" could provide.

@nazokiyoubinbou For my work documents I often casually start making a worksheet or lesson at school, get up from the computer and work on it more on my phone (re-reading fixing spelling errors) then at home pick it up again noticing changes made by my co-teachers. It's very seamless and copy-paste just adds to that. Naturally I consider all of these documents "public adjacent" in terms of privacy.

@futurebird FWIW, I have heard of FLOSS cloud collaboration tools that can do that where it can be hosted on a server one controls (eg in that case I would recommend the school itself hosts.)

@futurebird I am reminded of the way so many companies just don't tell people about hacks and such. I think you are right. They need people to use -- even rely on -- their cloud services, so they pretend it's all a perfect fortress when, by definition, it can't be.

@nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird is it cloud or is it a combo of LAN and Bluetooth?

@maco @futurebird LocalSend? Or the Apple thing? LocalSend is LAN only, but AdHoc works.

@futurebird The feature i really like is to screenshot a slide during a zoom lecture and having it figure out the url in the little footnote or citation at the bottom of the slide
