There isn't any reasons passports need to mention gender. I didn't know about this but some of you mentioned it last week, then I stumbled on this article. https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-the-rise-of-androgyny-changed-our-passports/

@futurebird Just this week I was visiting with a friend caught up in this. They can pass as female when needed but an X on their birth certificate means they can't renew their passport. I wish I knew how to help in a more concrete way than opposing the MAGAs in general.

@futurebird - This is part of the argument we made to the Dept. of State: sex or gender, by any definition, are irrelevant to entitlement for a passport. It;s like race, which used to be on passport applications, but rightfully is no longer.https://papersplease.org/wp/2025/03/12/state-department-puts-x-passport-applicants-in-limbo/

@futurebird If gender is going to be on identification at all, then having gender on passports is vitally useful to the trans/gender variant community, because passports are a federal form of ID. Because many states are controlled by people with traditional patriarchal ideologies, correctly gendered ID is hard to get in much of the US. The passport/passport card was a "strong" ID (proof of eligibility to work) that in useful situations allowed non-cis people to bypass their local states.
