A mythology podcast said that in the west, due to the Bible most people have negative associations with Babylon. Curious how that pans out on here.

For me it depends on if it's said with a Jamaican accent or not.

@futurebird The Babylon 5 TV show and Reggae, or the Rastafari references in some Reggae. I did go to religious studies (because the class was nicer than ethics/philosophy), so of course I also know some bible stories.

@futurebird Having worked in areas with large Afro-Caribbean immigrant populations, I first think of the original sin thing (kinda). But it's often used to refer to authorities such as the police and security services over here. The "downpressers".

@futurebird depends on the context. If it's "tower of" - communication problem. If it's in American - corruption. If it's in history - a huge empire , advanced for it's time.

@futurebird A home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers, wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal, all alone in the night. The last, best hope for peace.(The TV show "Babylon 5")...though from the choices, the Hanging Gardens (thanks, Civilization!)

@futurebird Same. In The Bahamas, there was enough Rastafari lingo floating around growing up, I still hear “Babylon” in my head with the accent. Or “Babby”.

@futurebird I mostly associate "Babylon" with dub reggae - the modern world, the world of European colonialism. Chant down Babylon - that kinda thing.
