Ben Wittes on Bsky posted this iconic image from the DC Metro. Great shot. Having spent a LOT of time on the Metro it brings back the memories.

@futurebird Nothing. Narcoterrorism became a propaganda term used by DOD after 9/11 to tie the old drug war to the new war on terrorism, thereby to get more funding. I know this because I was there in the Pentagon working for the counternarcotics office in those days. I had to start using the word narcoterrorism in all briefings and issue papers.

@strypey I agree it's a fun show and I think it's clear those who made it don't buy the fundamental premise either, because it's plainly ridiculous. I finished the series, enjoyed it all.

The only major #browser that says no to AI is #Vivaldi as far as I can tell. If you're using it, what's your opinion on it (compared to Firefox, if you like)?

I guess the thing now is to cancel Spotify. I don't know if Spotify feeds you music to listen to or you listen to your own purchased music. But if it's the latter you can set that up for yourself for free using a media server like plex or jellyfin. I use plex, it has a nice little music app.

I'm basically a person who won't pay for any subscription services. I'll find a way to get a reasonably similar result some other way.

@Nonilex Kennedy Center is named in law, so this is just another thing where everyone will overlook "law" (how quaint!) to satisfy the giant squalling pedophile in the white house

This country is in the grip of insanity. I can't imagine how much money a bunch of nutters spent on putting this book full of garbage into every mailbox.

@futurebird @mycotropic @WhiteCatTamer @RanaldClouston @rk @bookstodon Here is a handy list to pick from. The Children of Time series is excellent. The Final Architecture series is very good. The Tyrant Philosophers series is spectacular. I've read several of the standalone books which were good but not as engrossing as the series.

While I haven't read them, I'm sure many, many dissertations and books have been written about the idea that the morally, ethically, and sociologically diseased condition the U.S. finds itself today draws a straight line back to the misguided and harmful beliefs of the Puritans. Everything from patriarchy, racism, misogyny, and xenophobia probably blossomed out of that demented movement and its isolationism. Not that those inclinations didn't exist throughout the European world, but that the people who fled to America had them to extremes.

The U.S. has entered the Dual State condition described by Ernst FraenkelWhen a government kills dissidents and signals that the killers are beyond the reach of the law, legitimacy is no longer a property of the system. It is a hollow performance staged for a shrinking audience. The notion that these masked enforcers are legitimate law enforcement is a fiction. They are paramilitary operatives. They are thugs in the service of a regime. The Linguistic FrontLinguistic secession is no longer a matter of rhetorical preference; it is a moral and political necessity. Authoritarianism survives on the oxygen of recognition, requiring that we continue to use the honorifics and vocabulary of the old democracy to mask the reality of the new autocracy. To continue calling the shooters in Minneapolis “law enforcement officers” is not a professional courtesy; it is an act of collaboration that validates the lie that power still flows from the consent of the governed. Every time we use the state’s preferred titles, we surrender a piece of the reality we inhabit. We must instead strip the regime of the linguistic cover that allows it to operate under the guise of the law.https://www.theunpopulist.net/p/in-trumps-dual-state-dissenters-face

"Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents." (It's like 10 soldiers with some Dunkin donuts) https://bsky.app/profile/onestpress.onestnetwork.com/post/3mdbmif4wh224
