There is an opera about Nixon going to China. AN OPERA. Yes. And? It's good. It's one of my favorite operas. No irony. In it Nixon sings about how much he hates the press. The chairman dances. You don't need to "get" opera (musical theater but MORE) to enjoy it.I wish it could break containment. Opera fans respect it. But, no one else ever mentions it. I don't think they understand how *funny* it is, how blessed we are that it exists. (I assume John Adams knows what he did though.)

@futurebird One of my favorite 20th century operas. I had it on CD but it got lost somewhere along the line. Henry Kissinger is amazing!Unfortunately I’ve never had a chance to see a production.

@futurebird I know about this opera! I am OLD; I remember when it first came out.(I haven't seen it though--but I rejoice in the topics that have been taken into opera)

@futurebird I was pretty down on serialism when Nixon in China came out but since then I've taken my grump pills & yeah, I also unironically like it. Bonus "outtake": The Chairman Dances, which is incredible. (TBF I can kind of see why they might cut a 13m dance movement from an opera.)https://youtu.be/eSuLpMnjNbw

@futurebird I remember the music from the ping pong scene.I've never seen it but I remember it was a big deal when it debuted.

@futurebird I drove to Portland to see it, and watched the Met performance on line. Seattle Opera will never perform Adams because the late Speight Jenkins, director, didn’t like his works. I drove to SF to see the premiere of Dr Atomic, later viewing Met staging on line. Seattle Symphony has performed Adams’s works and schedules him as a conductor. Really disappointing about the Opera. I agree about Nixon, humor, pathos, tragedy. Giant airplane set is perfect for Boeing-town. ✈️

@futurebird You should also check out Doctor Atomic, Adams’ opera about the creation of nuclear weapons.

@futurebird I love, and miss the opera.I had an opera buddy to go with last century, but then she got married and had kids and we never had to time to go any more. Now, I don't want to spend that much time in such close confines with people, for safety, even with a mask on.

@asakiyume @futurebird Okay now! What on Earth? This takes verismo to a whole new level! I think I'll stay with the sorts of operas performed by the likes of Tito schipa, Dino Borgioli, Ferruccio Tagliavini, Leopold Simoneau, and Enrico Caruso. Even then, I prefer the lighter ones, not gritty realism.

@dandylover1 @futurebird I haven't listened to many from beginning to end--I usually only catch snatches of them on the radio--but one I *have* listened to is Tales of Hoffmann. I love that one.

@asakiyume @futurebird Try the 1932 recording of Don Pasquale. It's fantastic! I listened to it while reading an English libretto.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FeEiRH5ULk
