PSA: There seems to be a host of stable #kindle #jailbreak s out there. If you, like me, have an older Kindle lying around, don't let it connect to Amazon for the latest firmware updates. Instead, head over to https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/kindle-models.html and follow the instructions.Only took a few minutes in my case :3

@benthor@chaos.social It's best to not buy an Amazond Swindle in the first place, but if you already own one this is the best thing you can do with it.

@jae@fsebugoutzone.org @benthor@chaos.social Does not exist. All ebook reading devices stink of proprietary crap, usually even worse than smartphones. If you really want to read with e-ink I recommend just simply buying just an e-ink display and connecting it to your pc or laptop (or maybe a small single board computer?)

@SuperDicq @benthor @jae I hit a Kindle 2nd hand, I've never connected my Kindle to the net, and I rip-off everything I read on it. What benefits are there to a jailbreak?

@SuperDicq @jae I think https://pine64.org/devices/pinenote/ is worth watching. Not released yet. That said, you could do worse than looking for a used Kobo or Pocketbook. https://koreader.rocks/ reportedly has excellent support for both, without requiring a jailbreak...

@SuperDicq @benthor thanks, superdicq. i was looking at a small e-ink screen to replicate that 3dp "typewriter" standalone writing machine i've seen on the internet. i may adapt this to do some reading too.

@jeder @confusomu but if KUAL is already working, then the jailbreak must have worked. Which koreader version did you pick and how did you try to install it?

@ohanamatsumae to put a different reader app on there that supports many more file formats (like epub for instance). Not all of us buy our ebooks through amazon...

@bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz @benthor@chaos.social @jae@fsebugoutzone.org Not entirely free software as it contains some proprietary blobs, but still much better than an Amazon Swindle.

@SuperDicq @benthor @jae As far as I looked into it, either only or the majority of the "blobs" are the waveforms for the screen. And they are not even code, not executed, so I can live with them being present on a separate partition for the FOSS driver to look at.Anyway after a year thousands of km away from my paper book closet, the withdrawal was too close to killing me. This is the most free one for the foreseeable future, as no e-ink manufacturer shares their waveforms.

@benthor @SuperDicq @jae It doesn't cost a ton of money actually. Kindle Scribe in comparable configuration (still half the storage) costs more alone, and by the time you add all of the accessories included with a $400 Pinenote you are over $600 for Amazon. And you don't get any freedom for that price.

@bitals @SuperDicq @jae A used Kobo starts at 20 bucks though. If all you need is an eReader that can run free software, then hundreds of dollars aren't an attractive proposition. Especially for those of us who don't have that kind of money to spend. That said, I think the PineNote might actually be worth every penny if you are in the market for a device that can take handwritten notes. It'll be high on my list once my current reMarkable gives out...

@benthor @SuperDicq @jae I don't think comparing to the used market is a good argument. Like you can get a good value new car for $30 000 or domething in the US (I have no idea actually, let's pretend it's a good value if it isn't), but you can also get one for free from some dead persons grandchild. That doesn't make $30k a bad value, if you are satisfied with a free car that needs attention you just have a different use case.

@benthor @SuperDicq @jae Personally I had trouble handwriting on the Pinenote. But I have trouble handwriting in general nowadays lol, as I do so very rarely. I've seen people do it perfectly fine with the e-ink lag.

@bitals @SuperDicq I think I understand what you are trying to say. But what I was trying to say is that hundreds of bucks are a ton of money for some of us, regardless of what you spend them on. I wasn't implying that the PineNote with all its features somehow isn't good value, merely that there are much cheaper alternatives if all you wanted was an eReader that doesn't lock you in like a kindle, which was all that @jae appeared to asked for.

@bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz @benthor@chaos.social @jae@fsebugoutzone.org Haven't looked into it but I am willing to bet the bootloader and stuff like modem firmware is probably proprietary like most Pine devices unfortunately.

@SuperDicq @benthor @jae Bootloader is uboot, there is no modem, wi-fi/bt driver is in mainline Linux. A firmware blob is required though, just checked.https://pine64.org/documentation/PineNote/_full/#mainline-developmentAnyway, a completely free device is great, but without it the most free available will have to do, as I need _a_ device to read that does not glow.

@SuperDicq @benthor @bitals @jae The pinenote contains a 802.11ac card that runs proprietary software and I figure the bluetooth card is integrated into the same chip, but requires another proprietary program. The pinenote also uses LPDDR4 and the only systems I know that have free software DDR4 RAMinit are the Talos II ones.e-ink waveforms can have software appended, but in many cases they don't and they may not even qualify for copyright, as a waveform is a mathematical table tailored for a specific screen (and only one table will do really) - although it'll be better if the waveform format was documented.Manufacturers know this, which is why they demand a NDA is signed (to betray humanity by not sharing the waveform), before they'll provide the waveform needed to use the screen.

@jae@fsebugoutzone.org @Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @benthor@chaos.social @bitals@fediverse.bitals.xyz There is RYF certified ebook reader. The only FSF approved (and by proxy also rms approved) way to do this is by getting an e-ink display and connecting it to your computer.
