There is something about an empty train “not in service” passing at “minimum station speed” that is elegant, and grim. I am convinced these are the trains that go to the other secret versions of NYC.

@futurebird They have secret new yorkers on them who are invisible to you as well. But when you board a train that passes through the secret versions of new york, you are invisible to those residents living there. A multiverse of new yorks whose only connection to each other is the shared subway system

@Em It's really gone too far and it's not cute anymore. Especially without any graffiti to distract you from the grime. You see this is why I take the bus mostly... but yeah... it's faster.

@mloxton @futurebird The Hanshin line between Osaka and Kobe runs empty trains with the carriage lights turned off. It really has serious "train of the dead" vibes every time you see one.

@MLE_online So, hold up. I could ride a train to NYC.2 and there would be a city there but no people, but there would be people so things would just move around and change like the city was alive, but never when I was looking at them? That sounds kind of awesome for a vacation! And creepy. Gonna add a #backrooms tag because at this point I think I might as well.

@futurebird @whknott @MLE_online I thought so. It left me with a lot to think about. No need for a parallel dimension, either. All you need is history and culture and the arbitrary nature of national boundaries. It's also one of the only stories I know with a conspiracy plot that resolved in a satisfying way.

@futurebird There are other secret versions of NYC? You mean besides the mental map I, as a non-driver, have that so baffles my car-owning friends? I can believe it. I've long held the belief that there is a magical Irish pub somewhere in NYC where, if you sneak out a back door, you are transported to a similarly magical (but inverse) pub in Dublin. I haven't found it yet, but there are still a few Irish pubs I haven't visited.

@RandomStickman @futurebird There was a station on the R line that was badly damaged by the September 11 attack. It was closed for a few years, barely lit, and quite terrifying to ride through, especially the first time when I wasn't expecting it. Absolutely eerie!

@futurebird My late wife used to work for Japan Airlines. Once we were in Kona, on the big island, and we needed to be in Honolulu, on Oahu. A JAL flight came in, from Malaysia or Singapore I think, and it had to hop over to Oahu after disembarking the passengers. No one could book the short hop except JAL staff and crew, so we had an entire 747 to ourselves, except for the visibly exhausted Malay crew, who made conversation, but looked like they were about to fall asleep. Row after row of empty seats. It was quite spooky. I think a lot of airplanes, like trains, make deadhead runs to be where they need to be to support the schedule.

@futurebird I present ByBanen in #Bergen, #Norway. The "locals" hate it, and by locals I mean out-of-towners who don't care about the living standards of city folk. One of the most successful tram systems in the world, despite them generally being badly planned and as a result unsuccessful.I'm happy you got that congestion pricing though. Fight for that. It is good. We got that here as well and that nasty beige, yellowy "gas lid" that used to hover over our city is gone - thankfully.
