A sum of money is deposited in your bank account without strings. What is the smallest sum that would cause an immediate change in how you choose to live *your* life?Numbers in USD.

@futurebird I am having a hard time figuring out how I'd react to getting money without strings attached. I've read an awful lot of fantasy novels, but they did not prepare me for this.

@futurebird A few thousand would put me into a position where I could look to buy a house immediately (I'm saving up a deposit, but I'm not quite there yet). A few tens of thousands would mean I could buy with a much larger deposit, which in turn would give me greater freedom in finding the ideal place.Right now, that's by far the biggest potential change to my life that I can actually control. So that's my answer. I'll stop being reliant on the rental market and I'll buy a house. When do I get my few thousands? I'll be awaiting the cheque with bated breath.

@futurebird $10,000 would give me stability, but I probably wouldn’t do much to change my lifestyle.$100,000 would dramatically change my ability to pay off debt. Which would result in substantial extra money every month.

@futurebird Since I'll most likely be reliant on a meagre state pension, even hundreds of $$$ would just get swallowed up into the retirement fund. But I still chose the second option as it would certainly make a difference to my quality of life in old age.But that doesn't really address your question. A million pounds sterling, left in the bank, would be £45,000 per year interest, an amount that wouldn't keep up with inflation but would be an immediate change of lifestyle.

@futurebird I don't need money to change. I need a vision that is strong enough to make me change.

@futurebird I think I'd need around $70k for it to be an immediate and significant change to how I live. Less than that and I'd just keep living the way I do now, but with fewer worries and more luxuries.

@futurebird I almost answered that no amount would change how I live my life, but with several millions I would probably change how I work. And at this particular time in history I'd probably leave the US and live a few years or months at a time in various European cities.

@futurebird I often think about this sort of thing. The first big step change would be enough money to pay off my mortgage (a few hundred thousand). The next big step change would be enough money to live modestly on the passive income of a lump sum (on the order of a few million, probably?). After that? I would have literally no use for more money than that.

@futurebird With several millions we would have enough money to go to New Zealand despite having an Armada of diseases and being on early retirement die to them instead of being stuck in a Germany that is moving more and more to the extreme right.

@futurebird I wavered between 10k and millions. It depends so much on what I'd take to mean with "change" in our life. Ultimately we're older and financially stable; we'd basically keep living the way we already do. Perhaps "no amount" is the right answer...

@futurebird A million or two would be enough for me to quit work and instead work full time on stuff I like. But that's about it. Maybe buy a house.

@futurebird any amount of thousand USD goes huge here.Could probably get me to mentally afford (as it's monetarily free) a masters degree.

@futurebird My Dad liked to play the lottery, but as he got older he couldn't always get out to buy tickets and would ask me. One time there was a big payoff (around $500 million), so I took a flyer... But talking with Dad later I said it was fun to think about, but I didn't know what I'd actually do with all that money if I won. "Oh, you'd give most of it away." One of the nicest things he ever said about me.

@futurebird I'm stepping down from full time to part-time this month for my physical and mental health. A couple thousand bucks in the bank would make me feel a heck of a lot better about that.

@futurebird Been thinking about this lately for very specific reasons. I think you need much more money to feel secure or able to retire in the US than in a country with stronger public services. And the precarious situation right now makes it hard to feel that way regardless. They could kill the FDIC, the banks could fail, your money could become worthless. We have billionaires buying islands to be apocalypse bolt holes.
