It is now illegal to transmit personal information of EU citizens to cloud infrastructure in the #US as they won't be protected by the #GDPR.Many European service providers will have to move quickly to avoid fines, but eventually #EU data will be held in the EU, benefiting companies in Europe, and supporting #DigitalSovereignty. That means AWS, Azure, Google and iCloud can lose a sizeable chunk of their customer base if no moves are made. I am all for it.https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/you-can-no-longer-base-your-government-and-society-on-us-clouds/

@waeiski What makes you think those companies will prefer the smaller and hyper-regulated market of Europe to the bigger and less regulated market of the US ? The most likely scenarios are i) those companies staying in the EU and maintain compliance to GDPR but at a much higher price for the services they provide, ii) just leaving the EU altogether and moving their cloud datacenters to Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland where they wouldn't have to comply with GDPR at all . At no point those corporations will lose money. So either way are Europeans clients who will lose because of inane EU regulations.

@waeiski and we need to remember that it's not just cloud infrastructure *in the US* - it's cloud infrastructure *whereever it is* if it's owned or operated by a US-based tech firm. The Patriot and Cloud acts don't care about where it is.

@lightweightOne of those strange things that are evil when the Chinese do it, but strangely acceptable when the Americans do it. Like "freedom of navigation" naval exercises.@waeiski
