"if you're interested in _______, join our fedi server where we talk about _______ etc."yea no. an #ActivityPub server is not a community. it's a portal to the whole network that hopefully provides you a nice name but should primarily be chosen for its mod policy and cause you like/trust the owners. one personal account and maybe eventually another one for work, school etc. #SocialWebbut people have lots of interests and those each deserve their own private group. via #matrix or #lemmy etc.

@julian I haven't used NodeBB but I recognize that with Lemmy. I feel like there's some shaking out to do. I want ranking of comments here but I also want posts to flow throughout fedi. To be able to sort on hashtags like can be done re subreddits.but I also love the privacy and messaging and discord/group potential of matrix. IDK.

@julian @django I should have said #mastodon instead of AP but I am struggling with the confusion of best use case. And I'm a bit geeky. we need to solve the universal ID thing. I wish matrix and AP could be made better friends or something.

@julian @django damn. I guess what I'm saying is I wish that when people think about wanting to have an online group, more people would roll out a #matrix server instead of a #mastodon server. and there'd be more development to make matrix servers awesome places for groups. steal ideas from discord.and also every fedi ID should also function as a matrix ID. sorry I'm silly.

@wjmaggos I personally find matrix really sluggish in general, and have some other issues with it. I am looking forward to matrix/discord type chatroom/channels on the fedi! (and have seriously considered building, but avoided so far for lack of time)@julian

@wjmaggosYes, I feel like this is not well understood. I have seen a great many interest-based servers with little to no information about moderation. I personally may not be into ziplining or studying railways or whatever, but what I really want to know is how things are controlled around here, and why.
