Anyone has experience with repurposing an old kindle eith e-ink screen? Wifey was reorganizing my books and found one abandoned there. The alternative is throwing it away but I feel like repurposing would potentially be cool.

@wendigo@metalhead.club Anything useful aside for the original use would be, if not for actually doing it, an interesting read. But in a perfect world I would love to be able to harvest the screen and attach it to something like a raspberry pi zero or even my desktop as a screen to display temp and similar deets.

@raccoon Gotcha. I'll keep an eye out. I've never seen any hacks for it, but I haven't been looking either... ;>)

@raccoon Jailbreaking should be no issue. I have a 10th-gen Kindle and use calibre with it, along with the TTS package so I can have ebooks read to me. I don't use it enough to need the unofficial apps but can do should I want them. Helps it doesn't get updates any more.

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world I don't think this thing can handle TTS and calibre :PAlso, while I'm at it, do you know if a kindle fire can be jailbroken and have a different rom installed on it?

@raccoon calibre runs on the client PC, not the Kindle. It can convert PDFs to compatible formats and layouts. Also, yes.https://xdaforums.com/t/how-to-root-and-install-custom-roms-on-the-kindle-fire.1414626/

@raccoon Jailbroke it using one of the guides from this forum:https://www.mobileread.com (if I can find the post, I'll let you know...)Installed this extensionhttps://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236104 (seems to only work if Kindle's plugged in?) On a real computer, I use this script to generate an image the size of my kindle screen (ran periodically with cron): https://gitlab.com/jforseth210/kindlecalI serve the outputted image using Nginx, and set the URL in the kindle to its IP address. Let me know if you have any questions!

@raccoon If you're comfortable with HTML and python, you can rip out all of the calendar code and make it display whatever you want.
