Does anybody make a 25/40/100G thunderbolt dongle yet? I know 10G SFP+ exists, I have one.

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange there's 25G https://www.sonnettech.com/product/twin25g/overview.html40G would be tough with the overhead, since 80G USB4 hasn't hit the market yet, and 100G is a bit much even for that.

@ignaloidas It would still be useful from a "faster than the next step down" perspective.I was really hoping we'd see USB3 to 10G dongles, but those never seemed to materialize. Who cares if they're only able to sustain 5 Gbps, it's still faster than 1G!

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange If you want it that way, Thunderbolt/USB4 to PCIe card chassis are quite easy to get, and you can stuff whatever NIC you want into them (the thing I linked is just that, with the NIC pre-installed).

@azonenberg @ignaloidas sometimes it's a bit slow before we get a specific product. I remember it took literally *years* before I could find a usb hub with a usb-c upstream port and several usb-c downstream ports. The standard ones always have usb-a ports.

@f4grx @ignaloidas I will never not be cranky that USB-IF didn't standardize encapsulation of USB2 frames over superspeed, enabling many 480 Mbps devices to share a 5/10 Gbps uplink.

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange @f4grx@chaos.social I think the hard part was something with timing?Though with USB4 being capable DP and PCIe, maybe you could fit the timing requirements for tunneling USB2 into it, since it needs some better ones for those too?

@azonenberg - ok, tell me about that thunderbolt sfp+ dongle, please.I have a USB-C SFP one, and always came up empty looking for a SFP+ one. a) I don't understand why USB-C shouldn't also be able to give me more than just SFP can, so why not USB-C to SPF+;b) it didn't occur to me to search for thunderbolt; maybe because I'm on AMD, where apparently most of thunderbolt just works but not under that name...

@axel_hartmann@digitalcourage.social @azonenberg@ioc.exchange FIY, Thunderbolt since TB4 is just Intel's marketing name for USB4 with some certification. I'm not aware of any host implementations that truly loose some features over the Intel's certified devices (there's like a couple laptops that can only output to one external screen where certification requires 2, but that's nothing really)

@azonenberg - maybe I should have just googled before posting. Damn, that's not toy territory any more. Three hundred money!

@azonenberg @ignaloidas ah they cant? Thats why this particular hub appears as two hubs!

@f4grx @ignaloidas Nope! USB1 -> 2 has transaction translators so you can have many slow devices on a 480 Mbps uplink.This wasn't done for 2->3.

@azonenberg @f4grx @ignaloidas They skipped a generation, but made it cursed. Now you can do 2->PCIe (xHCI)->4

@AMS@infosec.exchange @azonenberg@ioc.exchange @f4grx@chaos.social that's not a transaction translator, that's a whole host!

@ignaloidas @azonenberg yeah the whole point of the dongle is to make it smaller......which is why I really want a TB->OCP3.0 chassis. It's an almost perfect form factor, just thermal is going to be painful. If Intel weren't such assholes about their datasheets I'd already have built it.

@equinox@chaos.social @azonenberg@ioc.exchange Yeah, the problem with USB4/TB is that so far, all of the silicon is from not the friendliest vendors. Really, there's either Intel or Asmedia, and neither of them are friendly to hobbyists.
