I know it will only bring pain and suffering but #foss #dev, I see a log of people recommending #gitea / #forgejo . Why not also #gitlab and why are they evil ?

@shalien GitLab needs a lot of ressources and Gitea / Forgejo can even run on a Raspberry Pi.Additionally GitLab and Gitea are not completely FOSS both of them are only Open Core.Forgejo additionally only uses FOSS for the development process. See: https://forgejo.org/

@shalien IMHO an advantage of @forgejo is that @fedora is going to use it: https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/fedora-chooses-forgejo/

@shalien Without going into details about #OpenCore and license cost, governance and community, you might want to take a look at https://forgejo.org/compare/ for an early overview. There will be probably people available to go into details somewhere, though. ~f

@shalien Wouldn't say gitlab is "evil", just that they are a for-profit company, and a lot of features are locked behind the paid version. But the free version of gitlab is perfectly usable, and many FOSS projects use it, such as Gnome and Freedesktop.

@charadon And I did used it until two hours ago yet for my personnal huge, it felt over powered. Especially since the default install hijack everything from the postgre server to redis and nginx. Forgejo already feel more cozy.

@shalien I would still recommend #gitlab in some cases (in regard with CI maybe). But it comes with a lot of complexity (and therefore some quite regular CVE's)I do favor #forgeio by default for its simplicity and transparency (also facilitating migration).

@shalien I think it’s because their roadmap is targeting enterprise specific needs and also AI nonsense. Furthermore the governance is also a threat. But I’ve been hosting Gitlab for 10 years on Debian and it it didn’t failed to me.

@b3n Yeah, I did put a lot of time in setting up local CI pipeline even if the doc try to push to use the official gitlab instance for CI purposes but since they're using AWS... Maybe I was using it wrong too, maybe I could just go without the CI part but it will have felt like I had rented a whole building just to get a parking spot

@rds Indeed it's quite a great piece of software. But I always felt like the self hosting option was a bait to push peoples to use the official server . Even if I run it on my homelab, it didn't feel mine.

@Codeberg I remember seeing that page but was unable to find it until you posted it . All the point listed are what make me uneasy with Gitlab / Github. I have setup a forgejo isntance and migrated my project. I had the pleasure to see that the #gitea plugin for #intellij work well with the current #forgejo version. Will finish my setup today and start tinkering around.
