@hipsterelectron @haskal As @dentangle says your freedoms end where your behaviour infringes on other folks freedoms.Which is where community and communalism comes in to me.Moderation and governance can if thought out and clearly expressed can make spaces and communities safer. But it also take the will of folks to choose to engage in those spaces. To give up a little bit of individual liberty and to share it with others to protect all our freedoms.

@onepict Perhaps "individualism vs community" is a less thought-provoking but also less confusing way of phrasing it?@dentangle @haskal @hipsterelectron

@hipsterelectron @haskal I think it would take a multitude of folks to describe it.Which would be an interesting book for @ps to produce as part of its book series. @how

@hipsterelectron @haskal I'm thinking more of folks recent experiences and why they chose FOSS.Because yes we have someone at the right time who published an idea. But movements form because of other people choosing to follow you. Some folks joined movements because an idea chimed in with their philosophy. It's subjective. So I'd like to hear from folks who engaged with FOSS and have found the implementation of that philosophy lacking.

@hipsterelectron @haskal I think it does depend on your goals as a programmer and as a project.Like for the moment Librecast is GPLv2 or GPLv3. We don't use the "or later."Our initial goals are to make the code available. We want the code to be open but not promiscuous like BSD/MIT licenced code.I don't think the average dev really thinks about the long term goals or how the code could be used. For a movement that chose FOSS licence's there's a reluctance to admit tech is political.

@hipsterelectron @haskal We all have an idea I think that for a movement to be healthy to change and grow you need a multitude of ideas and different experiences.Often in tech in the main spaces there's a lot of privilege. So ideas get fossilised.

@hipsterelectron @haskal As I said in mirror mirror "Some of us, who were attracted to FOSS for explicitly ethical, and political reasons appear to have misunderstood what the movement was about. We've woken from the dream. Reality seems rather harsh. We no longer believe in the fairy tale of FOSS."https://www.onepict.com/20250119-cobbles.html

@hipsterelectron @haskal there's a reluctance to examine the harms our code and our communities can do outside our immediate relationships and connections. It's how you end up with community memory asking people to be "reasonable" and accept the status quo.Which is insulting to those of us who don't find the status quo acceptable. We are using reason. At times we see the issues with more insight than the folks calling for "no politics please"

@hipsterelectron @haskal @dentangle our values are clear.https://www.apc.org/en/news/librecast-building-next-generation-internet-code-we-create-and-tools-we-use-can-help-or-harmBut in order to be sure we're on the right path, we need to listen to others. So I thank you for your feedback. I do hope you will pay attention as we publish our code and open up to more of the community to review us and perhaps join in.

@esoteric_programmer @otfrom @hipsterelectron Which is where giving up github is a good start. There is a sacrifice there. It's an example of freedom of association right there.
