Are any of you participating in a sci-fi or maybe non-fiction book club on here? I think there might be book clubs already... I think it could be really fun to pick a book and have a lot of people read it and discuss it with a good hash tag to keep the conversation together. But, I suspect maybe someone has tried to start this already or it's happening and I just don't know under what tags.

@futurebird Nice idea! Iād join up to a sci-fi book club! Havenāt seen anything like you describe on Masto .. but, then again, tbh I havenāt really looked! Iām reading āEcho of Worldsā by M. R. Carey at the moment. Itās his recently-published āDuologyā follow-up to his āInfinity Gateā novel - both space opera which are my favourites! #SciFiClub

@futurebird Something like this has been going on in the Finnish-speaking Mastodon/fediverse bubble for a few rounds now under the hashtag #avoinlukupiiri . Each month a book is chosen by voting (often it's been sci-fi or fantasy) and discussion follows.

@osma That's what I was thinking of doing. I'd make a little form and people could nominate books. We'd do a vote. Then the winner is the book of the month and hopefully enough people read it that there can be some fun discussions. I will let this post float around for a bit in case this is already happening as I would much rather bandwagon and boost an existing effort than start something. #SFBookClub

@futurebird Great!FYI, in addition to the hashtag #AvoinLukupiiri (which means "open book circle" or something along those lines), there is a coordinating account @lukupiiri that organizes the voting. The votes are just regular Mastodon posts with a voting option.

@futurebird https://bookstodon.com/@swordandlaserThis is the one I have followed since 2007/8. There is a podcast of the same name and the hosts are wonderful. And there's a March Madness where we pick 16 Fantasy books against 16 Sci-fi books and vote all month for the April pick. Typically each month is either a Sci-Fi pick or Fantasy and they alternate. Except for whoever wins March Madness. The podcast should be all the feeds.

@futurebird @osma "Fill out a form and pick a book" sounds like a spactacular idea. Then you could put the form on a website, and... wait... https://bookclubs.com/ :D(It only just now occurred to me that somebody might have actually beaten me to this idea, so I googled that up. No idea if it's any good.)Anyway... I've been stuck on *Racism Without Racists* for a couple of years and I would *love* to find a club discussing that one. Also, The StoryGraph has "buddy reads".

@osma @futurebird Yes! This is what we've been doing. It's been fun!At the beginning, the idea was floated that we could gather the book suggestions in a separate web form, but I feared that if you had to leave Mastodon the number of participants would drop (among some other issues). So now we're gathering the book suggestions as comments and then there's a vote through a poll (we have 15 options in the poll on this instance)The discussion is held via #, which is unique to each book. It's worked so far.

@futurebird I have an online book club, not on Mastodon but done through a group text. To avoid the issues of faster readers vs slower readers and spoilers in the chat, we divide the book up in sections and discuss one section per week. That keeps the discussion together on the same part of the book.
