@stux unfortunately Creative Commons has taken the position that AI training is fair use and thus not able to be restricted by a license. They've also argued in favor of copyright protection for AI-generated works. https://creativecommons.org/2023/02/17/fair-use-training-generative-ai/

@stux I think the by-nc-nd would prevent it, but they would mean no one could create derivatives, outside of what would be permitted by fair use. If there was such a thing it would also prevent uses you might not object to. I am working with a group of faculty proposing to use ML methods to analyze millions of documents so they can identify patterns at scale. It is something no one can do because of the volume of material.

@stux I am curious what various communities think about this kind of work because I don’t know how it could be disentangled from commercial, big tech AI.

@stux #zuck when he gets to your content's license.

@stux I mean, CC's decision makes sense, it's a default-accept policy. I would think you'd be better served with a default-deny, which copyright already is, btw. Policies or licenses notwithstanding, you'd also need the money to win in court.

@stux Weather it is determined as fair use or not, the creator should be able to specify that they do not want their work used in AI. Maybe just use your favorite license, but add a line to the beginning of it “No fucking AI please and thank you”

@stux I agree. However, they didn't respect regular "all rights reserved" copyrights when training AI.
