Do you ever have trouble using the mastodon/fedi app on your phone while using cellular data, but at the same time find that other much more intensive apps still work? I really feel like the data throttling on my phone is targeted. I have *never* had enterprise apps freeze for data— but this is hard to test objectively!

@futurebird I think the particular client that I use in pretty chatty in general and aggressively retries for things

I may just be paranoid. But I cannot understand how one app blasts me with video ads but the low bandwidth text blob app will hang. Also there is still no “post failed to send” notification in the app when this happens. The post is just lost forever without comment. This is one of the worst bugs and it has been reported.

@futurebird I don't put apps on my phone if I can possibly avoid it. I only install apps if it's the only way to access something. I use my (Vivaldi) browser to access social media, including Mastodon.

@futurebird My experience (this is iOS, I first used the Toots! app, now Ivory) is that Mastodon is very responsive even on bad connections, what it will lag doing is load heavy images or video. So I will have a usable TL, only with less images or videos.

@futurebird mastodon servers are run by individuals and generally have way less backend infrastructure than big corporate apps - it's probably the server, honestly

@futurebird @waitworry i wonder if it's down to the app or the server.. the next time it happens, might be worthwhile trying the webclient - just using the site in a browser. if it's more responsive, maybe it's the app. if it's the same, maybe the server or network.

@futurebird Our latest update a couple weeks ago made some improvements here. You should be left on the compose screen until publish succeeds or fails, so that you’ll still have your text there if it fails. We also report a bunch more potential errors during the publish process that used to just get swallowed. Let us know if you see any improvement or continue having problems. Bandwidth usage is something we’re working on, as well, but I won’t claim either issue is fully resolved!

@futurebird honestly my experience on a slow mobile connection or just no connection is that the Mastodon app handles it quite well.

@futurebirdCan't really say, my monthy cellular data usage is usually measured in kb. But I used to sometimes have that problem over wifi before my chosen server upgraded.

@futurebird apart from any bug you and others might identify/have identified, don't forget that the distributed nature of the Fediverse means that not everything is moving as fast as your connection to your instance through the app you use.

@futurebird Which app are you referring to?(There exist many of them...)And... problems could also be related to your instance.

@futurebird I've had trouble both on the phone and computer, so I'm guessing it's at the server end.

@futurebird Sometimes, the servers are slow/crowded/overwhelmed, so both the toots and the replies load slowly, and media takes a very long time.

@futurebird I'll notice the mastodon app struggle to keep up when I'm scrolling the feed, especially if I'm on a VPN. I don't notice with other apps hardly ever.

@futurebird I use Tusky on my phone. I've had it just keep chunking along while ebay and most google stuff shudders to a halt.

i do wonder if efforts like https://wehe.meddle.mobi/index.html and https://testyourinter.net/ will catch net neutrality violations against the small players not only favoritism and shakedowns among the big ones.
