@futurebird When this happens to you, do you get pain? For me, I get the visual aura which gradually expands over the center of my vision. It gets worse if I try to "look" at the lights. But if I lie down and mentally relax it goes away in an hour or so.I don't have any pain, just a vague feeling of my brain not being right.

@futurebird <3Thank you for what you do.For the good of the thread: IMO it is important for society to watch these videos and reckon with the horror and the need for change. I was taught in history, this is how change happens. How to square that with something someone once told me, "If you have the choice to see something traumatic or not see it, do yourself a favor and don't watch it." I think about this all. the. time. Existing on the internet like we do, we often have that choice.

@futurebird I almost called the police once. I was anxious and wanted to visit a public park. There were people different than me playing soccer and hanging out. I had heard that some cars were broken into. I noticed a guy walk up to my car and look in the windows. He seemed to be looking in other cars. I think he clocked me and walked back to the group. I drove away. I thought about calling but:* looking in cars is not a crime* I was afraid, my judgement was cloudy* I don't trust the police.

@futurebird these are great suggestions of better solutions! Your analysis is spot on.As a kid, we had police come to our summer camps with their dog to talk to us and tell us if we see something, say something for people acting suspicious in the neighborhood. Kids have to hear other adults explain to them the nuances, or they might blindly trust the "good cop" authority, and not recognize their own biases.

@futurebirdAlso, probably very few people will find this interesting, but the latest campaign in not another D&D podcast lampoons this kind of social media influencer with a Social Media Warlock (derives her power from her social media following.) @meganmariehart

@futurebird Just last night, heard an otherwise liberal old man talk about that swimmer who transitioned mtf, waited a year, and moved up in the ranking from 250 to 13 or something. The implication: men have a biological advantage in swimming fast, and mtf individuals competing is unfair. The alternative: *some people* have a biological advantage in swimming fast. Some women are faster than some men. Why consider being born AMAB as more important than being born with large feet?

@futurebird @gooser3000 I love the word "Nanitic" to refer to that first brood of workers a queen raises to do the initial foraging. As I understand it from watching Ants Canada, they are quite a bit smaller and very cute! The only problem is I keep getting it confused with Niantic, the location data company that also makes Pokemon Go.

@futurebird This is a tangent, but we have modeled planarian brains for a while (only 20 neurons!) and those robots do planarian stuff: avoid light, seek food, etc.. Most people wouldn't blink about turning those off, but somewhere between that and a cat, which is an organism we care more about than a flatworm, is a line... But is the line really all that sensible? What is a pet is culturally determined? Animal AG is pretty recent in human history. Hunting to extinction without realizing?

@futurebird Right. I dont know about cats, but some people don't blink about cutting guinea pigs in half, or dogs. The line is somewhere. Who is to say it is not between a simulation of a cat, and a cat? Is that any less arbitrary than the other options?

@futurebird I see teachers bring their grading to the swimming pool spectator area while their kids are in swim team, or to their part time jobs to do when they have down time. One of the reasons I don't think I could ever cut it as a teacher is I think grading would wear me down. What is your approach to managing the teaching workload?
