@BrodieOnLinux @osslate but I would like to vent about a software that I will not name, but it purports to do a lot of very useful things, but instead of doing that, it gives me a gray screen and hangs a lot of the time. It makes me angry, especially because it is a very popular and well-regarded software.

@futurebird Upcycled is definitely a vibe, and is "virtue signalling" in the best way: showing what looks good to you specifically, since it is often DIY, it values function, respect for items, and creativity.Minimalism can mean so many things and I agree we need some way to differentiate between the different "styles". For example "futuristic space industrial minimalist" gives me a different mental picture than "rustic minimalism", which is different still from the style you describe.

@futurebird my parents have some cane bottom chairs. The bottoms are broken. We tried to give them away, no one wants them. We tried to get them repaired and were quoted $175 per chair, plus the cost of materials. That's $2.50 per hole. And there are 70 holes. YT shows a DIY fix that requires time and skill and special materials.I get why no one can afford to restore old furniture. 1/2

@futurebird i'm not sure if it was designed by pedagogues, but basic on the TI83 calculator was such a great way to learn programming without being taught, because you could just scroll through menus and discover what pieces fit where and what typology you needed. Also, we were forced to carry it with us, and eventually we were banned from using certain functions of it, which added to its mystique.

@futurebird I had an organic low stakes one:PUZZLEYou ask for computer help on a forum. You get back a detailed and comprehensive post from a forum user about their personal experience on the subject. At the end, there is a disclaimer: "I used AI to help write this post, but I stand by everything it says."Do you "like" the forum post? What is the social meaning of "liking" a forum post?

@futurebird @mynameistillian what do you think about arcade games like Chuck e cheese and Dave n busters? Where you do the kiddy casino game, win tickets, and get prizes? I feel like for a lot of kids it's harmless fun but a few get addicted and you see them as adults in D&B.

@futurebird @mynameistillian It makes total sense! I don't think kids are always supervised that *well* at these brick and mortar places, but in theory they can't go there on their own, in like playing video games on their own. Adult exclusion makes 100% sense. I agree with keeping social harms out of the black market by regulating them as well. I wonder what psychologists think about IRL kiddie casinos? Maybe it can help kids learn healthy behaviors with their parents present? Idk.

@futurebird there is a great story about how stack overflow started out supporting openID, but this was too fraught and they scaled back to Oauth. I don't understand the technology myself. Blog post: https://stackoverflow.blog/2010/04/13/openid-one-year-later/I think if you use yunohost that has a login mechanism that unifies the logins into services on that server. Maybe it is LDAP? Idk

@futurebird As a camp counselor, I had about 50 kids a week I could try to learn, and I never managed it. I didn't always eve manage to learn all 8 in my cabin, or all 12 in my lesson group. My director had much less time with the kids than I did, but still managed to learn them well. When you were a new teacher, did learning and remembering 150 kids come easy to you? Or did you have to work at it?

@futurebird I did yoga teacher training at a place that I later realized was basically a cult, but one thing they did that I liked was each incoming class had their portrait pictures taken and then the instructors spent time learning people's names and faces. One thing I've done similar as a lifeguard instructor is we had information sheets that we collect from students. And then if we, as instructors, had any notes about any individuals, we would scribble it at the bottom of the sheets.

@screwlisp @corycarson @gsuberland ah ok, I thought it might be related to all those foam mattress companies. I don't see free *used* mattresses in the wild..

@futurebird When this happens to you, do you get pain? For me, I get the visual aura which gradually expands over the center of my vision. It gets worse if I try to "look" at the lights. But if I lie down and mentally relax it goes away in an hour or so.I don't have any pain, just a vague feeling of my brain not being right.

@futurebird <3Thank you for what you do.For the good of the thread: IMO it is important for society to watch these videos and reckon with the horror and the need for change. I was taught in history, this is how change happens. How to square that with something someone once told me, "If you have the choice to see something traumatic or not see it, do yourself a favor and don't watch it." I think about this all. the. time. Existing on the internet like we do, we often have that choice.
