it's semi-infinite library containing one 3.5" floppy disk for every possible combination of 11,796,480 bits (1.44mb).

@Rairii I wondered how long it would take someone to point out that this means Windows 95's original release floppies aren't in here

also yes this means that the library doesn't contain 1-to-1 copies of DD disks, everything GCR formatted (HI OLD MACS!), and DMF formatted disks. I'm sorry, you can't install Windows 95 from the Floppy Disk Drawers of Babel

but figuring out how many bits you need to represent EVERY floppy is above my paygrade, so it's left as an exercise for the reader.

@foone only weighs 2.5B metric tons. Mostly garbage, but there's going to be some great stuff in there...

@foone I'm feeling lazy; can't I just`dd bs=11796480 if=/dev/random of=/tmp/babelfloppy` in a loop for a while? I don't wanna deal with changing disks.

@foone unfortunately, the closer you look at floppies the more you realize the cosmic horror that they don’t have “bits” at all

@johnefrancis I think you're miscalculating. It's not 11.7 million floppies, it's 2^11796480, which is a Big Number

@foone according to my summary calculations, you can store the variations of 4 bytes (aka the case where 1 floppy would be 4 bytes) in the equivalent surface of my regional archives (assuming drawers that store 4 rows of 32 floppies in 16 drawers, packed 64 of them in a room, putting 256 room in each 8 main hallways of each floor)

@ryanfb @fooneQLS SSDs store a level of voltage between 0 and 15 to store 4 bits per electron trap. The most dense modern storage format is analog

@fooneIt becomes trivial once you realize that you need 11,796,480 bits to index the library, and the visitor asking for a given floppy has to provide you with the 11,796,480 bit index.

@foone Is there a similar one containing an image for every combination of bits that represents the contents of the state of a modern digital display?Weirdly that would include numbers representing a screenshot of my display right now whilst writing this reply.And another for now. And now too...

@fooneI have those floppies in my library, sorted by contents. Just give me the number of the floppy and I'll return you what's on it.
