This issue should not have been dismissed. There *is* a way to link to posts on here without an '@' symbol in the link. I don't care if it's "technically fine" it's not compatible. Why not use the link format that works with more services?https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/15565

@futurebird The ‘@‘ character is explicitly allowed in URLs.Making identifiers ambiguous in an attempt to work around bugs in other services is the road to internet disaster.

@marshray What is the harm in making the more useful /users/ link the default when people ask for a link to share?I paste the link and no one can click on it. This is why so many people think the fediverse is "hard to use."Stuff like this is a death by 1000 cuts.

@futurebird links to user pages work, but I can't get links to posts without @ or %40 in them.https://sauropods.win/%40futurebird/113818553043016549https://sauropods.win/users/futurebird

@adamhotep That might be an issue with our server. I found another way to work around this issue. (and for all the people saying "there is nothing wrong with @ in a URL" I also complained about it not working with the other services... but what incentive do they have to listen? This benefits the fedi not them)

@futurebird@sauropods.win @marshray@infosec.exchange it sort of breaks down the user+server identity that the @ style formatting displays, but honestly it probably wouldn't be that bad as long as the rest of the UI displays the identity correctlyit's just kind of bullshit to change valid code because everyone else wrote bugs, but I guess that's the story of most popular software projects lol

@froge @marshray Yes. Making your social network work well with popular services matters. Or it ought to.I agree that in the purest sense this "is our fault" but it hurts US.

@futurebird When I copy a link to your post I get:https ://sauropods. win/@ futurebird/113818677060766602(without the added spaces). That opens the post for me in a browser. What are you suggesting it should be instead?

@marshray https ://sauropods.win/ users/ futurebird/113818677060766602and this should only be given when you ask for a link "to share"since pasting the one with the @ causes all kinds of problems in multiple places.

@futurebird Seems reasonable to me.But I also understand the resistance to change to work around clear brokenness in others’ services. It feels a bit like proposing special rules of driving for blue cars.

@futurebird : Do we know an example of a place where @ doesn't work but users/ does? (In the original big report, it says that @ doesn't work in Google Sites, but the same person later says that users/ doesn't work there either.)

@futurebird @marshray Agreed. The instancename/@username format that browsers barf on is passing idiotic for reach and growth. Don't stick a fucking @ in the URL. This is the WWW. OTOH, the difficulty using mastodon does tend to keep out the riffraff. For now.
