@mjg59 Terms of service and other licenses and privacy policies are there solely to protect the service provider. They're painful to read if all you're looking for is how they restrain themselves from gorging on your data.

@fsf I'm concerned that Replicant is dangerously out of date and a security risk. Its Device Status discusses an effort to update Replicant to Android 11 (not 14). Replicant's last release was 18mo ago and is based on Android 6.What are the FSF's impressions of @GrapheneOS, which adds its own security updates atop the latest Android fixes but is limited just to Pixel phones?

@internetarchive is Google helping you financially? I'm concerned about the increased load to your servers and bandwidth.

I don't understand how Chrome is worth "at least $15-$20 billion" when it's >99% FOSS. Developing Chromium is a giant money sink and the only reason it outperforms Firefox is that it's backed by a company willing to pay that bill.If Chrome is sold, the buyer will be forced to either monetize it somehow (how? Remember how poorly that worked for Opera and Netscape before them?) or else to go non-profit with some other source of funding. The Right™ option in this line of thinking would be to force a new Chrome Foundation non-profit and to either fine GOOG enough to establish an endowment for it or else to implement some sort of corporate tax on web/cloud services to fund it (or, at the corporation's discretion, Mozilla, whose primary funding comes from Google today and will likely dry up with this ruling).https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/google-s-chrome-worth-up-to-20-billion-if-judge-orders-sale/ar-AA1ujJKa

At the moment, whitehouse.gov doesn't have an MX record and its A records don't listen on port 25, so you can't send #email to anything@whitehouse.gov

The whitehouse.gov domain's contacts are all inappropriately REDACTED FOR PRIVACY, too. If you're wondering about the 192.0.x.y address, that's not reserved space; you're thinking of 192.0.0.0/24 (RFC 6890, Special-Purpose IP Address Registries) and 192.0.2.0/24 (RFC 5737, IPv4 Address Blocks Reserved for Documentation). Automattic (of Wordpress fame) owns 192.0.64.0/18.

@futurebird @foone I look forward to the (sadly unlikely) future in which, in part due to its bridges to other social media sites, Mastodon becomes the … elephant in the room 🐘

@futurebird I'm pretty happy with GrapheneOS (which currently only runs on Pixels). This is a privacy-first security-hardened Android variant that allows you to de-Google your phone. It also lets you deny network access to ad-laden apps. I haven't tried too many (I prefer FOSS options, which are all ad-free), but those I've installed simply don't show me ads.I still had to install Ublock Origin (which updates itself) for Firefox, but I'm now >99% ad free.

@futurebird yes, I'd be surprised if it were anything but that or a parody account. It's still funny—and possibly true
