Posting factual information is ... becoming radical. Making it easy to find? Extremist behavior. Not making people look at ads to see it? Downright suspect! How dare you.

@justafrog Seeing how bad it's become, I can see why they find it so offensive. I can look at termite photos and not have any random AI gumbo thrown in for no reason. That violates their rights somehow I suppose.

@futurebird They want the same flood of garbage which exists in russian media. To destroy any hope of people knowing what's really going on, and organising against it.

@justafrog I think we need to get the word out that doing an "image search" for reference images isn't good practice anymore if you care about anything being based on real creatures, plants or anything. And it may be very limiting for even fantasy subjects as you are getting normalized and reprocessed image pudding.

@futurebird Much to my sorrow, image searches now contain an extra workload for me, in that I need to analyze each one for "is this slop?" and I hate that so much.Often, the slop appeals more to people, so you get things based on it, which were made by a human. It seems very hard to stem the tide, if it's possible at all.Even after LLMs get dropped and nvidia dies, the garbage will stay with us for decades.

@BruceMirken @futurebird More precisely, people's inability to separate out fact from pleasing misinformation is ruining things. If rejecting that slop were universal, it wouldn't cause a lot of difficulty.Instead we've got millions of people who think they can finally outsource all their work.

@justafrog @BruceMirken Not everyone has the same experience. There are areas where the slop works on each of us since we don't know enough to see what's wrong with it. For example AI slop cars? That would work on me. I don't care enough about cars to know a Toyota from an Audi.

@futurebird @BruceMirken The best example I know of is with young peacocks. The fake ones have tiny adult plumage, the real ones have brown. And really short tail feathers which the young males will display anyway, because it's what dad does.Plenty adorbs without fakes, but the fake version is much prettier to look at.The fake one is in stock image collections, which makes it worse.

@jetsoft @nazokiyoubinbou @justafrog @BruceMirken The nonsense is non-stop and designed to make people feel helpless to stop it or determine what is worthy of real concern. I focus on what laws might be passed what order signed and how they might be acted on. I try not to listen to anything Trump et al says or what media say about what they say. Their words are useless garbage. Only actions matter or are worth spending time on.

@futurebird I was just looking up some plant IDs in SEINet and then came over here for some random doom scrolling and you didn't disappoint, unfortunately. I immediately wondered whether LLM bots can access scientific data sets that are open to the public like SEINet. I don't see why they couldn't? But that means that they could generate convincing photos of herbarium specimens and species descriptions that were totally fabricated, but that looked legit. I'm pretty sure some sort of vetting is required before people are allowed to add records to the database, but for those who don't know to go directly to the databases, it could get really ugly. But, whatever, who cares. It looks right and the teacher probably won't check the citations to see if they're even real. As long as it looks good, that's what matters.

@futurebird @jetsoft @justafrog @BruceMirken Unfortunately, we are in the minority here -- and I feel this recent election proved it. Even among the people who knew Trump was bad and harmful, countless chose not to vote or to fall for the third parties because of all of this stuff. The flood of garbage tactic is scary effective against most of humanity it seems. I legitimately feel that those of us who it doesn't work as well on are in the minority.

@Mikal@futurebird I am sure they can in principle. In practice when I tried to generate snapdragons with a recent image generation model I got something vaguely like foxgloves. These things have been trained on human images, not so much plants.Note that generating reasonably looking plants has an interesting history and doesn't require AI:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-systemas the branching patterns of plants are amenable to formal description

@futurebird The war on facts and history is very likely what is behind the attacks on Internet Archive. Attacking them for cybervandalism entertainment just doesn't pass Occam's Razor, IMO.

@futurebird I think we are living through the response to the internet. People communicated worldwide and found out a few people are doing all of this to us. It is so scawee for us to know this because old systems will die.

@justafrog @futurebird I think it is time for a opt-in search engine based on reputation (wiki like) where you pledge to submit no ai (to the best of your knowledge) and respect the rules, every entry is manually checked by volunteers and then the index is distributed to the masses.violations get all your content removed, trust is gained by submissions and you can gradually increase your submissions as you gain trust.thinking about this lately.

@futurebird With AI summaries getting search placement *above* Wikipedia or people searching on social media instead I wonder if Wikipedia will remain in popular consciousness.

@futurebird the people I would seriously suspect(dare I say accuse) of being directed by foreign powers to spread dissent in our society are not above getting rich on the back of it, they have ads and usually they will try to sell you on their financial products. And probably they get some kickback from the Kremlin on top.
