Just fkn yesterday, a close friend said moving off FB (to bsky, whatever) is hard because 4000 followers. Wtf is with people and "followers"? Wtf is the value there? What is wrong with people when a corporate metric is embraced so personally? Our personal habits are the easiest thing for us to change. Wtf. Sites like FB *hurt people*. Isn't that enough? Does it have to be bodily personal to matter?

@tomjennings I'm a fraction of followers on bluesky and mastodon and get 1000% better responses and interactions and help. And a lot less shitheels.

@tomjennings It is apparently their metric of self-worth, make of that what you want...

@tomjennings follower count is a way to boost self-esteem. after all, if so many people follow what I squirt out on the web, I **must** be important? right? and the more, the importanter I am!of course, it's all exploitation of our very basic needs like wanting to be recognized. but it does work very well in tying people to platforms.

@tomjennings I think, the "follower"- thingie is the illusion of fame and audience. And the hope to "monetize" on that big time, somewhen. Like the other "big accounts". To become one of the big shots yourself. But - the party is over, it was scam anyway with no real value. Few people got rich, most never made it. Like in every gold rush.

@jyrgennThat is there. But connection -- even possibly ephemeral ones like you and I are having right now -- is one to one (or some). "Followers" is quantification, or this, or something like this. "We really had a connection!" That to me is the value. Not body count. There is all human emotion behind this as always, but its metrics aren't meaningful. I don't criticize (or even reference here) our personal desires, ... Just the often stated pursuit of metrics. @peterpur
