Deleting your Facebook account is the privilege of those who don’t have kids in school, and don’t have to communicate with groups of people over 40. Instead, maybe we should be working with schools (pre-K through 16) and community organizations to help them find an effective mass communication platform that isn’t run by the worst people on the planet.

Look: If you just can't BELIEVE that school districts do this--even if it's the kind of thing where *official* communication takes place via email but the actual information that you need to know is in a Facebook group--then you have exactly the kind of privilege I'm talking about. Go enjoy it and accept that it's not the case for a LOT of us out here in the places that don't fund their public schools very well.

(I mean, I think email is perfect for this, but every time I suggest it people laugh)

Also: "I don't believe this because it isn't MY experience" is such a lazy argument I don't even know where to start.

(1/?)@servelan> I'm ActuallyAutistic and have PTSD and can't get out muchSwap in ADHD for PTSD (although I suspect I have undiagnosed C-PTSD as well) and I'm in the same boat. The net has been an essential tool for me to stay connected to friends and family, as well as activism and voluntary work. Especially during the days, weeks and months when I struggle to leave the house, my bedroom.@mjibrower

(2/?)@servelan> What's there on FB fills in some of the deficitsIt doesn't have to be FB though, does it? It just needs to be a user-friendly online social tool(s) that allows us to manage our whole social life, using set of login credentials. AFAICT that's the killer features of FB (aside from the network effects of its huge captive user base). The one thing ethical replacements have yet to offer.

(3/?)Because there are decentralised replacements for everything FB can be used to do;* exchange messages with others, including in realtime* share details about events and handles RSVPs* share photos and videos, including making them only visible to particular subsets of people* organise our contacts into subgroups based on what we have in common, some public, some private* etc, etcThe problem right now is that each of these requires a separate app, with its own account and logins.

(4/?)Getting all of these disparate apps, and servers, and accounts to worn together smoothly takes a huge amount of time, effort, knowledge and tinkering. Even once it's all set and working, changes to any component of this complicated interconnected system can break the workflow. Requiring us to stop what we're actually trying to do and tinker with the tech, for an unpredictable amount of time. For anyone who doesn't enjoy tinkering with tech, this is a horroshow. I do, and it still can be.

(5/5)So while I think we all share the goal of making FB optional (maybe even the goal of abolishing it), this isn't something we can do as atomised individuals. It requires community organisation to get there. I wrote about this for the Bridge Seat blog;https://bridgeseat.substack.com/p/into-the-woods-we-go... but even that piece assumes the existing tech is sufficient. Part of what needs organising is improving UX and technical support. So people who enjoy the tinkering can get paid to carry the load.
