With GTK5 officially deprecating the X11 backend we can expect to see GNOME fully dropping X11 within the next few years. My expectation is either the first or second GTK5 based release.

@BrodieOnLinux nah, deprecated stuff is usually kept for a single major release. My bet is that it will be depreciated in GTK6.

@BrodieOnLinux With GTK5 officially deprecating the X11 backend we can expect a lot of whining. 😂

@mks_h Arguably the X11 side of GNOME is deprecated today, whilst not officially so most devs will tell you not to use it. I would be very surprised if it's not at a bare minimum heavily discussed once we get closer to release.

@BrodieOnLinuxNow that I got a linux tablet, I suddenly understand why no gnome developer wants to even hear X11 even mentioned. There is so so so much desktop users don't actually get to fight with.Touch, gestures, display rotation. And slap on hidpi monitors.Wayland actually works. X11 does absolutely not.Not on kde, not gnome, or anything else.

@BrodieOnLinux This would be fantastic! Really looking forward to a Wayland-only future. I'm already all-Wayland myself!

@BrodieOnLinux GTK 5 will _remove_ the X11 backend, not deprecate it.There's an open MR, that'll probably be merged soon, to deprecate X11 support in GTK 4 (to indicate that it will be gone at the next API break, which will be GTK 5). https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/merge_requests/8060GNOME (the desktop environment) is going to be dropping X11 much sooner than that. Probably in the next couple of releases. Especially if we can get more STF funding to iron out the remaining blocking accessibility issues

@AdrianVovk Yeah I read it wrong, so probably towards the end of GTK4 X11 will be fully dropped from GNOME
